If you don’t know Alex Cash ’12 personally, you may know his work. In fact, it may even be in the palm of your hand.

iPredict, an iOs application, is an “App” available for download on Apple products (iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad). iPredict features a crystal ball that presents the inquirer with a variety of fortunes. The fortune’s messages range from humorous to flowery to ominous. Alex and two of his cousins, Jared ’03 and Adam Cash partnered together around a year ago to develop the App.

Despite the App’s foresight, the Cashes was unable to predict just how prevalent the App would become. iPredict has seen great popularity in Australia, emerging as the second overall free application for a number of weeks.

In the United States, the free version of the application, iPredict lite, has been downloaded over a million times. In the month of January alone iPredict lite saw 10,000 to 35,000 downloads daily, while iPredict plus, the premium version of the App, was purchased over 300 times daily.

"At Graceland you can really define your own journey."

Thus, something that started out as a fun novelty for Alex and his cousins has been generating a flow of profit, something Alex says, “wasn't really on purpose.”

The business of creating these types of programs is something Alex is looking into professionally. A Computer Science & Information Technology (CSIT) major with a Web Design minor, Alex took a winter term devoted to developing Android applications.

In addition to being President of the Graceland chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Alex is also using his knowhow to help the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team develop a Lamoni businesses application.

Through these leadership opportunities, and a faculty that Alex calls “willing to listen” and “encouraging”, he has been able to define his own journey at Graceland and create opportunities.

“At Graceland, the house system, faculty, and organizations like SIFE and ACM help encourage students to create their own experience. Students can self-define what their next big thing is going to be,” said Alex.

Alex expects to graduate next fall and is in the application process with a number of technology-based companies. As for his current App, he and his cousins plan to channel the revenue they’ve produced into developing other projects.
