Worlund began his career at Washington University in St Louis in 1982, serving as the Director of Intramural and Club Sports. He held that position for 16 years before being promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics. During that time, he also spent 12 seasons as an assistant women’s volleyball coach at Washington University under legendary coach Teri Clemens. Worlund and Clemens teamed up to win seven Division III national championships. His tenure at Washington University lasted 33 years the final third serving as Associate Director of Athletics.

Joe was named the Graceland University Director of Athletics in the fall of 2014. During his time as Athletic Director he steered the Graceland Athletics Department through significant changes, and his leadership garnered success on and off the field with student-athletes and coaches. In June 2017 Joe began a new chapter of his professional career, serving as a Senior Development Officer for Graceland.
Joe and his wife Pam ’81 live in Lamoni, Iowa, they have two children Tyler ’11 and Jenna.

I am so pleased to be back on campus to give back in a small way to the place that was so critical to my personal and professional development. I enjoy that sense of home, and love the comfortable, belonging feeling of being on "the Hilltop."
