With Leah Wyman, Graceland University is welcoming a new direction for our choral music offering to the campus and the Lamoni community this fall. In her own words, here is what inspires her and her choir work, and what students can look forward to in the upcoming academic year.

What made you excited to join Graceland?

Right away, I could tell Graceland is a place that really walks the talk—not just words on a page, but in how people actually show up every day. I was especially struck by how involved students are in shaping their own experience. There’s a real passion and ownership that’s rare to find. It feels like a place where I can create, grow, and be part of something meaningful and exciting.

What are some of your favorite pieces to conduct?

Cells Planets (Erika Lloyd), Soon-Ah Will Be Done (African American spiritual), Tuttarana (Reena Esmail), Vor Hinsti (Icelandic folk song), Brahms and Haydn.

What do you enjoy most about working with student musicians?

I love how curious and energetic students are—and how open they are to trying new things. Many care deeply about equity and whose voices and stories we bring forward. That makes rehearsals not just fun, but impactful. Watching students take creative risks and cheer each other on? It’s a pretty amazing thing to be a part of!

What’s your approach to building a choir community?

I make an effort to get to know each singer as a person, creating space where everyone’s individuality is seen and celebrated. My research in psychology means I understand that everyone’s brain connects to music differently – through sound, memory, or emotion – and I use that to guide how I rehearse, listen and lead. I also think it’s super important to laugh together on a daily basis.

What can students expect this year in choir?

We’ll dive right into fresh, exciting music in rehearsals that keep things interesting—with challenge and support for all experience levels. Students can help shape the choir experience, suggest songs, maybe even conduct. We might also collaborate with other departments to mix things up. The goal is to build something unique to Graceland that we’re genuinely proud of.

What first inspired you to pursue choral music?

I began as a vocal performance major and solo singer, but it was actually my college Treble ensemble that introduced me to a whole new world of choral music, different from the church choirs I grew up in. I felt something electric when the harmony locked in—a sound I could never make on my own. That moment sparked everything that came next.

How do you choose music for your ensembles?

I love a wide range of music, especially from underrepresented composers and from diverse cultures. I believe the best learning and most thrilling experiences happen through creative, unexpected pairings, like a Hindustani raga next to a Renaissance madrigal. I usually bring a few options for the group to choose from, and invite culture bearers and historians to deepen our understanding and respect for the music.

What’s one thing you wish every student singer knew?

The best choirs are made up of all kinds of voices and personalities. No matter your experience, your voice and who you are matter. Choirs are about fun and growth rolled into one. Bring your authentic self and your focus—that’s what makes the music real and interesting.”

Anything else you’d like to add?

My door’s always open, and I’m so excited to get started and see what we can create this year! The only one possibly more excited is my Golden Retriever, Burt, who is ready to build his Lamoni fan club chapter.
