There are a lot of things that make Graceland special—but the traditions? That’s where the memories are made. Whether you’re painting the Victory Bell or eating an entire head of lettuce (yes, really), these are the moments that turn college into community.
The iconic Victory Bell has been a part of campus in one form or another for nearly 100 years. In the fall, it becomes a canvas for House pride. Students wake up early (or stay up late) to splash their House colors all over it. It’s a rite of passage for every Yellowjacket, a source of competition between houses, and a place where tasteful graffiti is always welcome.
The year kicks off with Muddy Games (exactly what it sounds like) and the activities don’t stop. From movie nights at the Coliseum in town to themed socials and academy-style award shows, the Campus Organization for Social Activities (COSA) keeps the campus buzzing all year. These events are where you build memories, friendships, and a sense of belonging.
Well over half Graceland’s Lamoni students play intramurals on House-based teams. And tape ball? Forget what you know about wiffle ball—tape ball is a Graceland original. This fast-paced indoor version of wiffle ball is one of the most beloved intramural sports on campus. It’s intense, loud, and surprisingly competitive. Even if you’ve never swung a bat in your life, you’ll want in on the action (or at least be there to cheer your House to victory).
Part lip sync, part dance battle, all-out hilarity. Airband is a Homecoming tradition where House Pairings choreograph movie-themed over-the-top performances for bragging rights—and a win in the Homecoming points race. Costumes, commitment, and a packed crowd in Morden Center make this a can’t-miss night for students and alumni alike.
A quirky and legendary once-a-year event: the Lettuce Club challenges students to eat a whole head of lettuce the fastest. The winner becomes the club president, whose sole responsibility for the year is to plan the one Lettuce Club event—at which the next president is “chosen.” Some bring ranch dressing, others pair their head of lettuce with chicken nuggets. However you take your lettuce, and it’s as hilarious and totally Graceland as it gets.
Before students head home for holiday break, Graceland throws the annual New Year’s in November. COSA sets a theme, decorates Newcom Student Union, and everyone gets dressed to the nines to dance and hang.
Celebrating diversity is a core value and Graceland has students from all over the world. Every spring semester, the Intercultural Celebration invites students from around the globe to share their culture through food, conversation, and curiosity.
Finals are stressful. Final Fling is the cure. Each semester ends with this all-campus bash—think inflatables, games, prizes, music, and more. It’s the last hurrah before break and a great reminder that hard work deserves celebration.
Graceland isn’t just a university—it’s a vibe. These traditions make it unforgettable. Whether you’re competing, celebrating, or just showing up for something ridiculous, you’re part of something bigger.
Come visit and we’ll show you around.
