Smart extras every college student should pack
When you’re getting ready for college move-in, your mind probably goes straight to dorm decor, clothes, and school supplies. But there are a few underrated essentials that can make your first semester way more comfortable—and you might not find them on a typical packing list.
Here are 10 things you didn’t know you needed until now:
Dorm room outlets never seem to be where you need them. Bring at least one extension cord and a power strip so you’re not stuck unplugging your lamp every time you want to charge your laptop.
Hydration matters, and let’s be honest—dorm tap water doesn’t always taste great. A Brita helps you drink more water (hello, better focus and skin) and makes midnight sips way more appealing.
Candles are usually banned, but a wax warmer is a safe, cozy alternative. Pick your favorite scent and create a dorm vibe that actually feels like home.
Yes, you will need them. Disinfecting wipes, spray cleaner, a broom, and a dustpan go a long way when you’re trying to keep your space livable and germ-free.
There’s nothing worse than realizing you’re sick and have zero medicine. Bring the basics: cold meds, pain relievers, allergy medicine, cough drops, and a few band-aids.
Even if you’re not planning to dress up, bring at least one set of dress clothes. You’ll need them for presentations, formal events, or unexpected opportunities—trust us.
Fluorescent overhead lighting is… a lot. A lamp (or two) gives your room a softer, warmer feel and is great for late-night study sessions without blinding your roommate.
Dorm rooms can get hot, and the noise from hallways or neighbors is real. A fan keeps you cool and doubles as white noise for better sleep.
You’ll be surprised how often you use it. Outdoor events, chilly lounges, football games, or late-night hangs—a comfy throw blanket is always a win.
Got leftovers from the dining hall? Need to bring snacks to class? These often-forgotten containers are game changers for college life on the go.
College move-in is overwhelming, but small extras like these can make a huge difference. Don’t just pack what’s required—pack what will make your life easier, cozier, and a little more fun.
