Library Policies

Who May Use the Library?

Anyone – students, faculty, Graceland Employees, researchers, and members of the public – is free to use the library provided their presence does not interfere with the safety of fellow library users and staff or disrupt the scholarly atmosphere of the F.M. Smith Library. Library staff may issue a verbal warning to a person for any perceived violation of these two basic tenets. Failure to comply will be followed with a request to leave. Should the person refuse to leave, staff will call for a security escort.

Checking Out Library Materials

Library users may check out any item for the specified amount of time with the opportunity to renew up to two additional times. Some items, like most closed reserve materials, rare books, and reference materials may not leave the library and are subject to shorter check-out periods.

The information below represents the most commonly checked out materials. Some checkouts may be subject to shorter or longer checkout periods and different daily or hourly fine rates.

Students

• Books – 28 Days

• DVDs – 4 Days
  • Overdues – $1.00/Day
• CDs – 7 Days
  • Overdues – $.10/Day

Faculty

• Books – 100 Days
  • Overdues – $.10/Day
• DVDs – 28 Days
  • Overdues – $.10/Day
• CDs – 28 Days
  • Overdues – $.10/Day

Staff

• Books – 28 Days
  • Overdues – $.10/Day
• DVDs – 7 Days
  • Overdues – $.10/Day

Community Members

• Books – 28 Days

Interlibrary Loans

Since these materials come from other libraries, the due dates differ from item to item. The due dates are determined by the library we get them from. If you need to renew an interlibrary loan item, please contact Jacob Starks.

Renewing Items

There are three ways you can renew your library materials:
In Person: Come to the circulation desk and tell us you need to renew your checkouts. Don’t forget your ID!
On the Phone: Call 641.784.5305 and let us know you need to renew.
Online (students and employees only): Log-in to your Library Account by using your Graceland username and student/employee number as the password.
