After graduating from Graceland University in 1977, Ben’s journey took him to the NFL with the Chicago Bears, where he was invited to minicamp and signed a two-year contract. Though his NFL career was brief, his passion for education and coaching led him to a fulfilling teaching career.

Ben taught and coached in Iowa and Maryland for decades, making a lasting impact on countless students. His achievements include 31 years as a K-5 physical education teacher in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, where he was named Teacher of the Year for St. Mary’s County in 2008 by The Washington Post. Graceland Journey:

Ben’s path to Graceland began in 1975, following two years at Indian Hills Community College, where he played basketball. Growing up in Leon, Iowa, and with strong Graceland ties through his wife, Bonnie (a Graceland graduate and retired educator), Ben embraced the university’s opportunities to excel both academically and athletically.

At Graceland, Ben majored in Physical Education and Health for K-12 and became a standout athlete. Under the mentorship of Coach Dudek, Ben flourished as a multi-sport athlete, participating in football, track, and baseball. Notably, Ben was the starting wide receiver for the football team in 1975 and earned All-American honors in 1976 and 1977. His success on the field reflected his extraordinary athleticism, as recognized by Coach Dudak, who had played summer softball with him before recruiting him for football.

Campus Life and Activities:

While Ben lived at home with his parents during his time at Graceland, he was fully immersed in campus activities. A proud member of the football, track, and baseball teams, he found camaraderie and mentorship through athletics.

Graceland’s Impact:

Graceland laid the foundation for Ben’s dynamic career in education and athletics. His rigorous academic and athletic experiences taught him the value of perseverance, teamwork, and adaptability—qualities that guided him through his time in the NFL, teaching, coaching, and refereeing.
