Composer Dr. Doug Pierce has been described as “special” by Slide Hampton. As a recent graduate of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, his doctoral research and compositional focus involved blending contemporary musical styles with liturgical Orthodox Christian music.

Pierce has received several prestigious fellowships and grants and has been selected to participate in some of the world’s finest residencies, including the Felix E. Grant Jazz Fellowship, the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Residency, the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, the Edgier Fellowship and the Maryland State Arts Council Grant for Composition. In his recent composition, “Suite for the Panagia,” Pierce makes thoughtful and intelligent use of liturgical chant alongside contemporary gospel, jazz and chamber music styles. The result is a uniquely beautiful and balanced blend of these musical traditions.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Pierce grew up in Lexington, Georgia, before moving back to Detroit during his later teenage years. After graduating from high school, he attended Michigan State University and the University of the District of Columbia. He later received his master’s degree from Western Michigan University and his doctorate in composition from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Pierce currently serves as director of bands at Graceland University. In addition to his professorial duties, he continues to educate music students as a clinician, guest composer/conductor and performer.
