During a small ceremony on July 22, the little blue house that was the home of Dr. Velma Ruch for 68 years became Graceland’s Ruch Cottage.
Dr. Ruch, legendary chair of the English Department and the university’s interim president for the 1974-75 school year, before moving to a long-term care facility in Lamoni, wanted to make the house available for visiting scholars and distinguished guests.
The rooms will be furnished with items from Dr. Ruch’s travels and will preserve her considerable archives of lectures and writings. President John Sellars accepted the title on behalf of Graceland.
Special visitors included Community of Christ President Steve Veazey and his wife, Cathi, and former Community of Christ Presiding Evangelist Everett Graffeo.
