Vice President for Institutional Advancement

Graceland University, with two distinct and beautiful campuses in Lamoni, Iowa, and Independence, Missouri, invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice President for Institutional Advancement (VPIA)   from accomplished individuals who will provide this historic liberal arts university with outstanding, strategic leadership during a time of exciting change.  Graceland seeks a visionary leader to build a sustainable, best-practices advancement operation and prepare the institution for a campaign to fuel student success, academic programs, and new initiatives in digital transformation, social responsibility, and health and wholeness for the entire University community.

The University seeks an enthusiastic, experienced and entrepreneurial leader who will be the key player in building upon strength in an advancement program that benefits from deep alumni loyalty and a cohesive campus culture.

The successful candidate will be both a proven and sophisticated large gift fundraiser, adept at engaging and soliciting donors alone and in partnership with institutional leaders, and a powerful strategist and manager who knows and can lead all aspects of a modern advancement program. To maximize its enviable alumni loyalty and create lasting institutional impact, Graceland needs a committed advancement generalist who can hire, train, lead, and inspire a team to implement the best practices of a multi-faceted advancement program to build new capacities in principal gifts; major donor identification and engagement; campaign design and delivery; volunteer management; annual giving; prospect tracking, research and management; stewardship and donor relations; database management; and reporting and analytics.

Among the key characteristics of the successful candidate:

  • Deep knowledge of and proven mastery in the advancement profession, with higher education experience preferred. 
  • A record of disciplined, focused leadership and management, setting and meeting ambitious goals and mentoring and managing staff to achieve optimal results. 
  • Experience as a powerful partner to a president, dean, or CEO in advancement work, to trustees, and to an institution’s leadership team.
  • A credible, personable, adaptable institutional representative who writes and speaks effectively and can engage the entire community to forward the university’s mission and goals.
