Professional Development Schools (PDS)
Graceland University, in partnership with school districts in Iowa and Missouri, offers a unique learning experience for elementary education majors during their senior year. The concept of the PDS is to provide quality teacher preparation, renew the practice of in-service teachers, focus on reflection and inquiry, and impact student learning.
What does the internship look like?
The student candidate's senior year begins at the start of the district's school year. Graceland students are involved in all staff development activities and have many opportunities to interact with other faculty in the building. When school begins, the student candidate is in the school building Monday and Thursday throughout the first semester. Wednesdays are devoted to the completion of Methods coursework.
Each student candidate is assigned a mentor teacher. This teacher and classroom is also the student teaching placement during second semester. January is devoted to the completion of a practicum in the student candidate's endorsement area onsite.
