Graceland University Assistant Professor of Spanish Jonathan Montalvo, PhD

Graceland University Assistant Professor of Spanish Jonathan Montalvo, PhD, received the Graceland University Exceptional Service Award at the April 28, 2019, commencement ceremony, presented by Graceland President Patricia H. Draves.

Draves’ words at the ceremony were as follows:

As one of the newest members of the Humanities Division, Dr. Jonathan Montalvo has quickly made a significant and lasting impact to the Graceland community. Just this year, he crafted the curriculum and will launch a Hispanic studies program, an interdisciplinary major that incorporates a Spanish language program with history, political science, communications, philosophy, literature and other courses to develop well-rounded bilingual students, who can make substantial contributions to bettering our community and our world.

Last summer, Jony also initiated Graceland’s first experiential learning opportunity in Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Graceland students will return again this summer and continue the work they began, learning the language and culture while helping to rebuild the island. Anyone who has met Jony is aware that he doesn’t know a stranger. He is welcoming to all and serves Graceland in so many ways, especially our Latinx students, many of whom he has helped recruit to our campus.

In short, we are so fortunate to have him as a part of our community. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Jonathan Montalvo, this year’s winner of the Exceptional Service Award.
