Graceland Choirs Group Vocal Technique Workshop – February 17, 2014

The Graceland University Group Vocal Technique Workshop consists of bringing together high school choirs to help promote and enhance their musicianship and artistry. This workshop will focus on developing each participant group and individual vocal skills during a full-day activity with an internationally renowned expert.  This year’s guest artist will be Dr. Giselle Wyers, Director of Instrumental and Choral Conducting and Voice at the University of Washington School of Music. Participating students will learn basic principles of healthy vocal production applied both to group and individual singing. These vocal principles will be applied to each participating choir’s current repertoire. The activity will end with a performance in which each choir will demonstrate the musical improvements achieved during the day. Sponsored by the DEKKO “Ignite Your Spark” Fund.

Trombone Day at Graceland Workshop and Concert! – March 8, 2014

The Graceland Band Department will host the Fifth Annual Trombone Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Drawing close to 30 participants each year, Trombone Day is geared to increase the awareness, education and appreciation for the trombone through master classes, rehearsals, recitals and a trombone choir concert featuring all the workshops' participants.

Clinicians will include Prof. Frank Perez, Director of Bands and Trombone, Graceland University, Dr. Lee Bash and the Kansas Trombone Quartet. BAC Horn Dr. from Olathe, Kansas and Rieman Music from Des Moines, Iowa will bring instruments for students to play and tryout, as well as many books and supplies. The Graceland Music Department invites middle school, high school and collegiate trombone students to attend. Admission costs $10, which includes lunch.

Sponsored by the DEKKO “Ignite Your Spark” Fund and Rieman Music. The Graceland University Music Department invites middle school, high school, and college trombone students to attend.  Sessions begin at 9 a.m., and the final concert begins at 3:30 p.m.

Pride of Iowa Band Festival – March 10, 2014

On March 10, 2014, the Graceland Music Department will host the Pride of Iowa Conference Honor Band Festival and Concert, which includes 12 schools from more than nine counties. Through the honor band festival, the POI Conference provides a showcase for the best student musicians the conference band programs have to offer. The first POI honor band on record was held in 1989 at Mt. Ayr High School in Mt. Ayr, Iowa. Since then, the festival has moved from school to school through the conference, giving each school the opportunity to host. The Graceland Music Department is honored to host this wonderful festival. Sponsored by the DEKKO “Ignite Your Spark” Fund and the Pride of Iowa Conference.

Concert performance will be on Monday, March 10, 2014 at 7 p.m. in the Shaw Family Auditorium, Shaw Center, Graceland University. Admission is $5.
 

2014 Iowa Day of Percussion – March 29, 2014

The Graceland Percussion Department will host the 2014 Iowa Day of Percussion, and First Annual Graceland University Solo Percussion Competition, on Saturday, March 29, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Drawing percussionists from around the Midwest, this exciting event provides an opportunity for middle school, high school and college percussionists, as well as their teachers, to spend a day learning from some of the most influential percussion artists and pedagogues. The day features a series of clinics and masterclasses, and concludes with two concerts featuring guest artists, university percussion ensembles from across Iowa, and Graceland University faculty and percussion students!

The 2014 Iowa Day of Percussion also coincides with the First Annual Graceland University Solo Percussion Competition! The category for 2014 is Solo Marimba and students may register in one of two divisions: High School and Collegiate (18-25 years of age). The winner of each division will be invited to perform alongside world-renowned percussionists on the final evening concert. Guest Artists for 2014 include Justin Alexander, (Virginia Commonwealth University), Dr. Michael Bump (Truman State University), and Dr. Thomas Burritt (The University of Texas at Austin). Sessions will cover a diverse range of topics, including snare drum, marching percussion, drum set, timpani and keyboard percussion performance and teaching methods. Rieman Music from Des Moines, Iowa will bring instruments for students to play and tryout, as well as many books and supplies.

The Graceland University Percussion Festival is sponsored by the Percussive Arts Society, Pearl Drums/Adams Musical Instruments, Vic Firth Drumsticks and Mallets, Innovative Percussion, Indian Cymbals, Sabian Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, Grover Percussion, Malletech LLC and the DEKKO Ignite Your Spark Fund & Graceland University.

The Graceland University Music Department invites percussionists, percussion instructors and percussion enthusiasts of all ages to attend. Sessions begin at 9 a.m., and the final concerts are at 3:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.  Admission to all events is FREE!

The Graceland Band Department will host the First Annual Woodwind Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Woodwind Day is geared to increase the awareness, education and appreciation for the woodwind instruments (flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone) through master classes, rehearsals, recitals and a concert featuring all the workshops' participants.

Clinicians will include Dr. Mary Huntimer, Adjunct Professor of Woodwinds, and Prof. Frank Perez, Director of Bands at Graceland University. Rieman Music from Des Moines, Iowa will bring instruments for students to play and tryout, as well as many books and supplies.

Meet the Maestro Series: Dr. Morten Lauridsen Workshop and Concert! – May 7 & 8, 2014

The Graceland University Choral Department presents a wonderful workshop with world renowned composer Dr. Morten Lauridsen. High School choirs are invited to work with Dr. Lauridsen to enhance their musicianship through rehearsal, workshops, performances and mentorship. Dr. Lauridsen is considered to be one of the foremost living American choral composers and his ground breaking choral compositions are in high demand and performed all over the world. Students will be conducted and coached by Dr. Lauridsen and will have the opportunity to sing in a culmination performance alongside the Graceland University Choirs.

Piano/Keyboard Camp – Summer
Graceland University hosts a piano camp every summer that is open to students of all ages. Students will study both piano and pipe organ. To provide a unique experience, piano camp students are hosted by local families for the week. For more information, please contact Jack Ergo, Professor of Piano at ergo@graceland.edu.
 

IMTA Auditions
Each January, IMTA piano auditions are held at Graceland. Piano students of all ages from the surrounding communities are able to attend. It is a great opportunity for performance and reviews.
