Gustav A. Platz and Roy H. Mortimore would be proud of the metamorphosis now taking place within the hallowed halls of their namesake, Platz-Mortimore Science Hall. Graceland's Board of Trustees weighed many options before recently concluding that a complete renovation of Platz-Mortimore - a total makeover - will bequeath to our students a ‘state-of-the-sciences' facility.
The creatively transformed building will be called the Resch Science and Technology Hall to honor Richard J. "Dick" Resch and his family. Resch recently provided a $3 million capstone gift which, united with funds raised during the "Graceland Forever" Capital Campaign, will provide superb infrastructure and industry-standard equipment for the new facility.
Dick Resch is a 1958 pre-engineering graduate who has good memories of his classes in what was then the fairly new Platz-Mortimore Science Hall. He plans to be back on "the Hill" this fall for Homecoming Weekend to take a look at Platz-Mortimore and visualize what it will look like in about a year.

Charles Schmidt, Associate Professor of Music, and David Pickering, Dwight and Ruth Vredenburg Endowed Chair in Music, will be playing a recital of piano and organ music on Monday, July 7, at 7:30 p.m. in The Shaw Center Auditorium. This recital, which will be one hour in duration, is being held as part of Graceland University’s first Keyboard Camp and is free and open to the public.
Charles Schmidt will open the recital by playing Franz Liszt’s arrangement of Robert Schumann’s song “Widmung,” followed by Alban Berg’s Piano Sonata and Frederic Chopin’s Ballade No. 3 in A-flat Major. David Pickering will play Daniel Gawthrop’s Four Noble Gases and the first movement of Charles-Marie Widor’s Fifth Symphony. Pickering recorded the Gawthrop work on his second recording, Like a Fire, which was released one year ago at a regional convention of The American Guild of Organists in Baltimore, MD.
