Alumni Spotlight: Joyce Soule

Alumni Spotlight: Joyce Soule

Currently enrolled in Graceland University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program with an anticipated graduation date in 2018, Joyce Soule ’09 has already experienced incredible success in the health care industry. After serving as chief nursing officer (CNO) at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, a 760-bed trauma center, Soule was recently promoted to CNO of the full-service, 668-bed tertiary care center, Medical City Dallas Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

Soule earned both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing in Healthcare Administration through Graceland’s School of Nursing in Independence, Missouri. On her journey to expand her health care profession, she chose Graceland because it had one of few credentialed and highly rated distance learning programs. The online nursing curriculum allowed her the flexibility to work full time while managing young children with a military spouse who traveled eight to 10 months of the year. With the familiarity of Graceland’s system and quality of education she had already received, Soule chose to return to the university’s distance learning program to complete her DNP.

On her experience in instruction, Soule shares, “Graceland provided me excellent preparation to be a nursing professional and a nurse leader. I learned the importance of collaboration and networking as a nursing professional and that we need to come together to enhance learning and have a unified voice.” Her networking skills have significantly grown giving her the ability to ask questions that drive things forward. She credits this proficiency to the mentorship of the faculty at Graceland and the skillset she developed in the distance learning program.

Soule attributes her graduate and post-graduate education at Graceland with expanding her view of nursing, nursing professionalism and responsibility to the nursing profession, the future of the nursing profession, and the improvement of human life.

As CNO of Medical City Dallas Hospital, Soule’s responsibilities include overseeing and managing the daily operations of the nursing department.
