Undergraduate Program

Graceland's teacher education program is noted for excellence in providing a technology emphasis, psychological and sociological foundations, and learning theory. Beginning in the sophomore year, course work is balanced by extensive field experiences in both public and private schools. Many students choose to complete six weeks of their spring student teaching field experience in New Zealand. International placements are also available through the University of Nothern Iowa.

Accredited by the Iowa Department of Education and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the Gleazer School of Education offers a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education which leads to licensure in the state of Iowa in several endorsement areas.  Secondary Education students on the Lamoni campus pursue a degree in their field of study and take education coursework for teacher licensure. When planning to teach in a state other than Iowa, students will plan their program in accordance with the requirements of the other state.

Our program is flexible and provides several options for students wishing to pursue a bachelors degree in teacher education:

Lamoni Campus
A full residency program is offered on the Lamoni, Iowa Campus for traditional students. This enables students to take part in the many activities offered on campus. Classes are offered at various times during the week, and instructors are available for one-on-one assistance during their scheduled office hours. Education students have the extra benefit of their own computer lab housed in the School of Education department, with technology assistance available as needed.

Regional Campus Centers
Adult learners, who might be employed and/or have family responsibilities, have the option of completing their degree in conveniently scheduled evening classes at campuses in Independence, Missouri; Trenton, Missouri; and Centerville, Iowa. Students wishing to enroll in this program should be making significant progress in completing an Associate's degree from any community college. With the transfer of an Associate's degree, the completion of the elementary education degree requires two years with a reading endorsement and two and one-half to three years with a mild/moderate special education endorsement.
