Higher Education

 

Assistant Professor of Education,  Graceland University, 2002 - present. Member of School of Education (SOE) Leadership team responsible for making decisions that drive the 23-member school of education. Serve as SOE Professional Development Chair as well as numerous SOE and campus committees. Generalist instructor in undergraduate teaching across the curriculum. Served as a "faculty mentor" for three Master of Education Collaborative Teaching and Learning (CLT) cohorts. Taught on-line courses for Quality Schools Program and CTL Program. Part of a team responsible for developing program standards and on-going program evaluation and development and NBPTS alignment. Design, development and facilitated faculty retreats and workshops. Served as Secondary Education Coordinator for the three years; assisted students to move seamlessly between their content area of study and the SOE. Faculty advisor and student teacher supervisor. *Facilitator and Designer, Collaborative Learning is a Team Effort, Excelsior Springs, Missouri. Worked with the Dean of the School of Education to design and deliver a dynamic weekend retreat in contemplative teambuilding that would serve as a basis for the MAE in Collaborative Teaching. Lead a weekend retreat in contemplative teambuilding for Graceland students enrolled in the Master of Arts in Education program.  Spring, 1999-2004

 

*Director, Orientation to College Life, Designed, produced, and implemented curriculum for a required extended 7 week orientation course.  Trained 15 faculty and staff to teach course; held weekly curriculum direction meetings. Designed and implemented Upperclass Mentor Program (UMP), a peer educator program intended to enhance OCL instruction. 1993-99

 

*Instructor.  Taught extended 7 week orientation class, Orientation to College Life.  Course included campus resources, values clarification, career and academic development, diversity and gender clarification/exploration, leadership and learning styles. 1990-1999

 *Instructor, Excellence in Teaching Institute.  Iowa Association of Business and Industry Foundation, Drake University Jasper and Powesheik County (year long program ).  Taught one-week learning laboratory dedicated to teaching school-to-work transitional skills students need to be successful after graduation. Trained teachers to better prepare students for life choices ahead. Interactive program that taught current techniques for involving students and creating a collaborative learning culture.  Teachers gained exposure to state-of-the-art operations directly from businesses and identified trends in career development.  (Summers 1996, 1997, 1998; full academic year, 1997-1998)

 

*Committee Member, School-to-Work grant for Lamoni Community Schools.  1998-99

 

Junior Achievement Advisor,  Lamoni Community Schools.  Taught 3rd grade students to identify what types of businesses can be found in a typical city and what types of workers they require, how workers apply their skills to their jobs, and how their jobs make a difference in the city.  Spring, 2001

 

Trainer, Occupational Site Auditing. WORLD EDUCATION,  Boston, MA (sponsored by Iowa Association of Business and Industry Foundation/Iowa School-to-Work-Office).  Trained to prepare classroom teachers to conduct Occupational Site Audits at potential student worksites.  Trained December, !997

 

Reinbeck Community School, Reinbeck, Iowa. Taught junior high English, Reading and served as the English Department Chair.  Developed "scope and sequence" strategies for district's K-12 Language Arts program.  Revised the junior high language arts curriculum.  Created and designed Advanced Composition and World Literature curriculums.  Led the department through a NCA self-study to a successful review. 1981-84

 

Webster City Junior High School, Webster City, Iowa.  Taught junior high English; worked with counselors as a faculty advisor; helped implement testing/measurement procedures to establish guidelines in "ability tracking" students. 1981-84

 

NESCO Community School, Zearing, Iowa .  Taught all aspects of the high school English curriculum.  Designated department chair. 1978-80

 

AREA & Education Association, Cedar Falls, Iowa. Participated in two government grants which were developed in an effort to improve instruction materials for reading and writing curricula.  Researched, wrote and published two chapters of the total grant which was published by the Department of Public Instruction in the fall of 1982. 1981-82

Grant Writing - Pension Benefit Government Services - Contracted to write grant and edit existing policies and documents. May, 2001

 

Teagle Grant - Worked with Buena Vista University and and Wartburg College to establish design for a robust on-line Leadership repository. 1999-2001

 

Sandage Leadership Grant - Committee chair work funded by Sandange to design an inclusive campus-wide student leader program that would promote the university's desire to achieve 'premier' status. 1999-2000

 

STUDENT LIFE EXPERIENCE:

Collaborative Online Leadership Project. In collaboration with Buena Vista University and Wartburg College wrote and received a Teagle grant for the development of an web-based leadership education center that students, faculty and staff from all three institutions could assess.  Currently designing the on-line center.  1998-2000

 

LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE Committee Chair. Lead a committee through the research and design of an expanded campus-wide innovative curricular and co-curricular leadership program.  1999-2000

 

L.E.A.D. Supervisor,   Supervised and directed the four L.E.A.D. co-directors.  1999-2000

 

L.E.A.D. Director.  Designed, implemented, supervised and managed 125 person elite leadership education and development program. Directed students through the experience using programming, seminars, mentoring, conferences, lectures, retreats, literature review, and campus participation.  Renewal was based on extensive documentation of requirement completion, and the ability to articulate the value of those experiences in relationship to their personal leadership development. Supervised twelve student committees, an executive board of 15 students, and a review board of 20 faculty, staff, and students--each of these bodies serves to produce programming, provide leadership to other students, determine renewal in the program, and to assess the direction of the program. Career Specialist, Graceland College CAP Center, Primary responsibility included working with education majors in the area of professional development and career preparation.  Worked closely with the Department of Education faculty and staff.  Counseled undecided majors; coordinated, implemented, and supervised Career Exploration Internship Winter Term.  Conducted workshops in the area of career development and preparation.  Served as student affairs generalist as needed performing tasks including; academic advising, personal counseling, self-assessment instrument administration and evaluation, special advisor" for at-risk students, authored Senior Newsletter, created, developed and organized the Homecoming Career Alumni Network Fair, Student Activities Fair and the "Have a Heart Lend a Hand" Volunteer Fair. Spring 1990- 94.

 

Assistant Director of Residence Life, Area Coordinator, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Managed, supervised, and trained 80 resident assistants, 15 graduate staff, and 2 professionals in a residential area of 2,260 residents in 12  residence halls.  Responsible for staff supervision, student discipline review and milieu management.  Planned, developed and implemented staff and student leadership development programming and training.  Advised area programming board, managed area budget, and served as a member of the central administration team. 1986-89

 

Freshman Advisor, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Academic advisor (live-in) for 150 first year students; supervised and monitored progress of probationary students; worked with "undecided" students in setting goals as well as maximizing the period of time labeled as "undecided" as a valuable learning experience.  1985-1986

Residence Hall Director, Miami University, Supervised 11 student staff and 1 graduate assistant in a 250 freshmen male residence hall.  Trained and evaluated staff; organized and conducted staff developments and student life programming.  Counseled students concerning academic, career and personal issues.  Responsible for implementation of the discipline process.  Worked closely with the Department of Residence Halls to maintain safe, comfortable environment. 1985-1986

 

Career Counselor, Career Planning and Placement Center, University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa. Served as a resume and letter writing consultant.  Conducted career-related workshops, and mock job interviews.  Advised "undecided" underclassmen on career choices and options.  Administered and interpreted interest and aptitude surveys.  Worked in the career library -- updated materials, and investigated and researched potential options for various college majors. 1984-85

Consultant,- Point of View

 

Participant, Leadership Iowa. A statewide issues-awareness program aimed at giving participants a better understanding of the social, economic and government issues facing all Iowans.  Thirty-five men and women are selected each year to meet once a month from September through April for two day sessions to learn from experts on a variety of subjects.  Each session was held in a different Iowa community, with a diverse group of professionals from all over the state comprising each class.  1998-1999
