2009 – Present Principle Investigator: Assess the Feasibility of Using In-home Telehealth to support Breastfeeding. (Under review by International Lactation Consultant Association). The purpose of this study is to test the feasibility of using the telehealth in assessing and providing lactation support in women’s home. The results of this study will support development and submission of a larger grant proposal to further test this specific intervention in a limited access group such as mothers in the rural area or mothers of disadvantaged populations.

Completed Research

2007 – 2008 Principal Investigator. Employers’ Support of Breastfeeding Working Mothers: Psychometric Assessment. Funded by Office of Grant and Research, University of Kansas School of Nursing, awarded for $5,000. This study provided reliability and validity evidence for an adapted instrument for measuring employers’ intention to support breastfeeding using the major constructs of the theory of planned behavior as a guide.

2005 – 2006 Co-investigator. Work Life Experience among Registered Nurses in ThailandHospital. Funded by Office of Grant and Research, University of Kansas School of Nursing, awarded for $5,000. PI: Dr. Ubolrat Piamjariyakul.

The aim of this study was to describe the work life of staff nurses who were employed in the hospitals in Thailand. A descriptive, qualitative research using the principles of naturalistic inquiry was used to guide the design, data collection, and data analysis in this study.

2003 - 2007 Project Director. Promoting and Supporting Breastfeeding in Adolescents. Funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research, PI: Dr. Karen Wambach

The overall objective of the study was to test developmentally sensitive interventions to enhance breastfeeding decision-making and increase the initiation and duration of breastfeeding among disadvantaged adolescent mothers. A randomized clinical trial tested the effects of a comprehensive prenatal, in-hospital, and postpartum educational and support intervention provided by a lactation consultant – peer counselor team.

2002 - 2003 Principle Investigator. Perceptions and Attitudes toward Employment and Breastfeeding in Low-Income Women. Funded by the faculty research grant of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Missouri, awarded for $5,000.

The purpose of this qualitative design was to examine the influence of maternal employment on motivation and attitude toward breastfeeding and explore women’s perspectives regarding continuation of breastfeeding after returning to work/school.

1998 – 2000 Dissertation Research. Effects of Nursing Intervention on Breastfeeding Duration among Primiparous Women Planning to Return to Work.

An experimental pre and post-test control group design was used to evaluate the effects of a nursing intervention on breastfeeding duration and to determine factors influenced duration of breastfeeding. A total of 166 women participated in the study. Quantitative and qualitative data analyses were used to address major research questions.

1998 Research Assistant. Lactation Mastitis Among Primiparae: An Exploratory Secondary Analysis. Mentor: Dr. Karen Wambach.
