January 22, 2014

Dr. Matt Binnicker graduated from Graceland University in 1999 with a Bachelor’s in Biology and then entered a doctoral graduate program in Microbiology at the University of Iowa. After receiving his doctorate in 2004, he was accepted into a Postdoctoral Fellowship program in Clinical Microbiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Following completion of his fellowship, Dr. Binnicker was hired as a Director in the Division of Clinical Microbiology at Mayo Clinic, where he currently serves as the Director of Clinical Virology and Associate Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. The Division of Clinical Microbiology at Mayo Clinic performs nearly 3 million diagnostic tests each year for infections like influenza, HIV and tuberculosis. Dr. Binnicker has written over 30 peer-reviewed articles, authored 4 book chapters, serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, and has been invited to present his research at conferences around the world.

When asked how Graceland helped him achieve his career aspirations, Dr. Binnicker responded, “Graceland offered me a world-class education in the sciences, no doubt. But what sets GU apart is the Liberal Arts education and the vast array of opportunities to become involved. Graceland prepares you to handle diversity, to interact with others in a team environment, and to serve as a leader.” He continued by saying, “Graceland is a small, close-knit environment, and students have the ability to become involved in so many ways. The opportunities that I had at GU to play collegial-level sports, serve on Student Government and participate in the LEAD program; those are experiences that I look back on and point to as ‘difference makers’ in my personal and professional life.”

Matt is married to Krista Binnicker (‘96-99) and they have three sons, Ethan (10), Hayden (7) and Jaxson (5), all of whom Matt is hoping will follow in his footsteps as Graceland Yellowjackets and members of Closson House.
