Abby Hernandez ’11 has two big passions—theatre and community service.

And through the Lamoni community, she’s been able to experience both.

She’s currently directing her third show as the Director of the Lamoni High School Theatre Department, the musical “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”

Earlier in the semester, Abby and her high school students put on “Leaving Iowa” by Tim Clue and Spike Manton, as well as a two-act combination of the Jonathan Rand plays of “Check Please!” and “Hardy Candy.”

Outside the Fine Arts realm, Abby is an AmeriCorps service member, working with the Youth Launch program. Through Youth Launch, Abby works with high-barrier youth, inside and outside of school, helping students pursue personal areas of interest.

Abby also gives back on her weekends, teaching junior high Sunday School at the Bloomington Community of Christ church.

"Learning about Accounting and Business Ethics are really going to help me in the long run if I want to open my own playhouse."

“Graceland is located in a community that allows you to go out and be somebody,” said Abby. “It’s really rewarding that I can be a part of the community while keeping up with my degree, directing, and giving back. That’s something that I’ve always been really passionate about.”

Abby graduated from Graceland last December, one of the university’s first Film, Theatre & Performance Studies majors. While at Graceland, Abby explored other areas of interest as well, founding the Swim Club, serving as Captain of the Improv team, and participating with Outreach International.

Abby calls her community work “rewarding” and she says she loves watching the transformations students experience through an outlet like theatre. Her future interests are diverse, ranging from acting pursuits in cities like Houston and Chicago to public relations in Kansas City.

Eventually, Abby hopes to utilize her Business minor when she opens her own playhouse.

“I just want do it all,” said Abby.
