Barbara Lamoni Campus Escapes Iowa Flood Devastation. South-central Iowa escaped the recent floods relatively unscathed compared with the devastation you've been hearing about in the eastern half of the state. Offices in the basement level of the Frederick Madison Smith Library were relocated to upper floors but you could hardly notice the changes what with the total relocation of offices, equipment (everything) from the Platz-Mortimore Science Hall. The 1950s-vintage building will receive a total renovation in the next year. Science and math classes will be held at various locations around campus this year. The "new" building will be renamed the Resch Science and Technology Hall to honor the family of 1958 alumnus Richard J. "Dick" Resch – Dick recently made a $3 million gift to help with renovation costs. Read all about Dick and the new Resch Hall in the summer issue of Horizons which will be mailed soon. Please keep students and faculty of GU's Master of Education program in Cedar Rapids, IA in your prayers. They were forced from their flooded offices. Instructor Barbara Pestka and students are shown here, ready to help with cleanup. Cedar Rapids suffered some of the worst flooding in Iowa.

Greg Thanks to Those Who Contacted Greg with Student Referrals. Greg Sutherland, VP for Enrollment and Dean of Admissions, wants to thank all of you who contacted him with referrals of prospective students after reading last month's newsletter. "It was a real treat hearing from so many alumni and friends," said Greg, "and their kind referrals were much appreciated." Many referred students are now "potential" Graceland students! The 1973 GU graduate, 31-year veteran employee on "the Hill," wants to give every student the opportunity to share in that Graceland Experience. So, when you think of a high school student or junior college transfer student you think might be a good fit for your alma mater, give Greg a call at 641.784.5110, email him at sutherla@graceland.edu, or go online to Admissions Web pages. He adds, "Thanks so much for your support. I look forward to talking to you."

Grants to GU Support Area Youth Programs. Graceland has been awarded two grants that total $266,670 to support youth programs throughout south central Iowa. The Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service announced an award of $145,670 to support 24 full-and-part-time AmeriCorps workers. The Dekko Foundation matched those funds with an additional $71,000 for the AmeriCorps program. AmeriCorps is sometimes described as a "domestic Peace Corps" for those who want to devote a year or two to community service. AmeriCorps members will become involved in after-school programs, tutoring, summer recreation, safety or other efforts that encourage education and youth development. Read more at Graceland Grants.

2008 Visual Arts are Alive on "the Hill." Graceland visual art students Megan Finch and Kelly Kunzler represented the university as Emerging Young Artists at the prestigious Des Moines Arts Festival recently. They were chosen among dozens of artists from colleges and universities across the state – six universities were represented by 23 artists chosen. Read more about Megan and Kelly at Emerging Artists. Summer began with a bang with two art camps hosted by Graceland's Division of Fine Arts. Each year about 130 emerging artists from northern Missouri and southern Iowa participate in Fine Arts Camp and Art Academy. Both are day camps that offer activities to children ages 6-15 in early June. Fine Arts Camp features daily activities in art, music, theatre and movement. Art Academy is an intensive week of visual art experiences in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics. All courses are taught by Graceland Faculty or graduates. It is an exciting opportunity for Graceland to expose students to special instruction and techniques in the visual and performing arts. View photo galleries at Art Camps.
