Many students may choose a self-directed learning experience. If you are a sophomore or above, you are eligible for an individual study program and a proposal can be developed using the procedures described below. However, before you submit a proposal ask yourself the following questions:

    1. Do you have enough information about the topic to know the questions to ask?
    2. Are necessary sources available to permit the type of investigation that you wish to make?
    3. Do you possess the necessary financial resources to complete the proposed study?
    4. Does time permit the investigation?
    5. Do you have a plan that incorporates the scientific method of inquiry? Can you be objective?

Please take the following steps in developing your proposal:

    1. Secure the necessary forms from the SPECIAL PROGRAMS or INFOCENTRAL in PATRONESS HALL.
    2. Consult with a faculty sponsor.
    3. Receive the endorsement of your academic adviser.
    4. Receive the endorsement of the appropriate division's individual study committee.
    5. Sign a waiver form, if the program is off campus.
    6. Submit the completed proposal to the division individual study committee no later than October 27, 2006.

This deposit is a portion of the total program fee.

    1. Successful completion of three Winter Terms will be required for all baccalaureate degree programs. (It is strongly recommended that one be taken during the freshman year.)

    2. The Winter Term requirement for transfer students enrolled full-time (12 s.h. or more) at Graceland is assessed as follows:

    3. Students may attend more than three Winter Terms.

    4. Part-time students may enroll in Winter Term but must pay tuition by the credit hour.

    5. Winter Terms are not required of students who enroll at Graceland exclusively on a part-time basis (11 s.h. or less) and Outreach students.

    6. Students may not enroll for more than 3 s.h. credit during a Winter Term, nor may students enroll in more than one Winter Term program during the month.

    7. Students will not be allowed to repeat a Winter Term program which is essentially the same as one previously taken unless they are seeking to remove an "F."

    8. A college approved study-abroad program will fulfill a Winter Term requirement if the experience is at least one semester in duration. (The Winter Term requirement for that one year is waived.)

    9. Athletes who participate on varsity teams during Winter Term may opt out of one Winter Term without forfeiting eligibility to participate in intercollegiate athletics.

    10. Students may petition to make-up deficiencies in Winter Term requirements.

    11. Non-students may participate in regular Winter Term offerings for $100.00 under certain conditions.

    12. All participants in off-campus programs are required to sign a Waiver of Responsibility Form.

    13. Fees are assessed for special program activities and classroom materials when necessary. All students enrolled in these programs are required to pay the fee.

    14. All deposits for outside-the-continental U.S.A. programs are viewed as non-refundable except when a program is cancelled by the college. Student requests for refunds, in emergency cases, will be considered.

    15. Generally, no general education credit or credit toward meeting a requirement in a major, except for internships required in the major, for Winter Term programs is given.

    16. Students should not expect to be on campus during Winter Term unless they are enrolled in a Winter Term program. Exceptions to this policy must be requested in writing and directed to the Vice President for Student Life for approval.
    17. Unless indicated all programs are 3 s.h., pass-fail grading.
    18. Lower division programs are those with a "0", "1", or "2" listed as the fifth character of the program number. Upper division courses are those listed with a "3" or "4" as the fifth character of the program number. Programs with dual numbers offer both upper and lower division options.
    19. Frequently summer-winter term programs are offered. These offerings allow students to make-up winter term deficiences or accelerate meeting the required number of Winter Terms. Full time students are entitled to one Winter Term program per calendar without additional tuition charge. Anyone registering for an additional program will be assessed the per semester hour tuition rate for the appropriate term. This policy applies to all programs offered throughout the year and designated by a student as a Winter Term choice.

Payment of full tuition, board, and room for the fall or spring term includes the Winter Term. Part-time students are assessed additional fees if they enroll during Winter Term. Students who enroll for the spring term only are required to pay tuition, room, and board for Winter Term. This amount is applied to their account for spring semester when they officially register for that term. Some programs have special fees associated with the program activities and all students are required to pay these fees. Such fees are indicated in the program description segment of this publication.
