FAMILY
Married to Dr. Barbara Hiles Mesle, Professor of English, Graceland University. (Barbara and I are a Pair-o-Docs and a Pair-o-Profs.)
We are the proud parents of: Sarah Mesle, currently a graduate student in English at Northwestern University, graduated with Highest Distinction from the University of Iowa Honors Program; and Mark Mesle, recently graduated with distinction in English and Honors History from the University of Iowa. Barbara and I are grateful everyday for having two of the world's most wonderful children ever. .
PERSONAL VALUES
Any philosophy or theology I do must put "the welfare of children above the niceties of metaphysics. Any theology that provides for creative growth of children will make it satisfactorily on all other scores." Robert McAfee Brown
"There lives more faith in honest doubt,
Believe me, than in half the creeds." Tennyson, "In Memoriam"
"The hard fact, beyond all sentimentality, is that either we share suffering in love, or outside of love, and it is not the same in one case as in the other." Daniel Day Williams, "Suffering and Being in Empirical Theology"
"There remains the final reflection, how shallow, puny, and imperfect are efforts to sound the depths in the nature of things. In philosophical discussion, the merest hint of dogmatic certainty as to finality of statement is an exhibition of folly." A.N. Whitehead, Process & Reality xiv
"Reality lies beyond my grasp; and deep, so deep, who can discover it?"
Ecclesiastes 7:24 Jerusalem Bible
