Service leadership is highly valued by Graceland alumni and students. The new nonprofit management certificate is one way that Graceland continues to demonstrate that value.

Whether you choose to pursue a certificate in nonprofit management or just benefit from the service leadership opportunities, you will be developing characteristics that will give you an advantage when you enter the workplace.

Graceland University, with American Humanics, is proud to offer our students the opportunity to earn certification in Nonprofit Management and Leadership.

The American Humanics program is an innovative course study that equips university students to become skilled professional and leaders in America's nonprofit service agencies.

The American Humanics program is founded in experiential education. Students involved in American Humanics will develop competencies on nonprofit mangement through internships, co-curricular activities and academic coursework. American Humanics is a complement to any major field of study at Graceland University.

Certification Requirements

  • Major in any program at Graceland
  • Take core nonprofit courses
  • Complete a 300-hour internship
  • Attending the American Humanics Management Institute (AHMI)
  • Participate in the American Humanics Student Association
American Humanics is an alliance of colleges, universities, and non-profit organizations that offers students non-profit management and leadership experience.

Service Leadership Opportunities
Community Service; Winter Terms; Alternative Spring Breaks

Canned Food Drive - Trick or Treat for Canned Food is held every year around Halloween. Graceland students go door to door throughout the community and pick up canned food to be donated to the local pantry.

Girl Scout Projects - A Girl Scout workshop is held each year during February. Graceland students lead the girls in a variety of games.

Earth Day - Earth Day is a celebration held each spring to promote the importance of preserving the Earth. Elementary students are taught about recycling, reusing, and reducing through games and activities.

Alternative Spring Breaks - LAB (LEAD Alternative Break) is a great opportunity to do something fun and meaningful over spring break. Break Away is a nonprofit organization that provides training and information about developing alternative break programs.

American Humanics Fall Retreat - The Fall Retreat is a chance to get to know fellow Graceland students better, meet students from other American Humanics programs, learn about careers in nonprofit, and have fun. The two day event consists of many speakers, student presentations, and break out sessions.

Fall Site Visits to Kansas City - Students learn about the nonprofit sector by visiting sites such as the American Red Cross, Girl Scouts, and YMCA of Des Moines.

American Humanics Spring Retreat - The Spring Retreat is a great way to get motivated and learn about nonprofits. This overnight event entails a speaker, case studies, presentations, and lots of fun.

Spring Site Visits to Des Moines - Students learn about the nonprofit sector by visiting sites such as the American Red Cross, Girl Scouts, and YMCA of Des Moines.
