What kind of insurance does my student need to protect his/her computer, stereo, and other personal possessions?

Graceland does not require students to have property insurance but it is a suggestion. You can find a link to National Student Services Incorporated on the Residence Life Office site at:

Are there storage facilities available on campus to store some of my student's belongings?  What about off campus storage?

There is limited storage space in the basement of the Residence Halls.  Graceland cannot guarantee the safety of your student's belongings.  Furniture and carpet are not permitted to be stored.

Off campus storage is available at local storage units.  Contact the switchboard at 641-784-5200 to gain listings for those units.

Is there a shuttle service between Graceland and the airport?

Yes.   Graceland has a shuttle that runs between Lamoni and both the Kansas City and Des Moines Airports.  Times are posted in advance on the student services website:

What if my student doesn't like his/her roommate?

If your student is having problems with his/her roommate, have them visit with their roommate and explain what is bothering them.  If they are unable to work out their differences, have them see their House President for assistance.
How will my student get housing next year?

Returning students will participate in a room draw during the spring semester.  Seniors will be given preference of rooms, followed by juniors, and then sophomores.
May students stay in residence halls during vacations?

Residence halls are closed over breaks.  Students must properly check out of their rooms with their House President before leaving on break.  During the Thanksgiving and End of Semester Breaks the halls will close at 9:00 a.m. on the day following the last day of class.  During spring break the halls will close at 6 p.m. on the same day that classes end for break.
Can my student bring a car?

Yes.  Students may have vehicles on campus as long as it is properly registered with the university.  Parking permits may be purchased for the price of $15.00 a year in the Residence Life Office.  Additional information about parking on campus including a map is available online at:

How does a student appeal a parking fine?

Appeal forms may be obtained in the Residence Life Office (MSC room 29).  Fines must be appealed within a week of the issue of the ticket.  The Senate parking committee will notify students of a hearing date and their decision via campus mail.
Can my student live off-campus?

Freshmen and sophomores:  The university requires all freshmen and sophomores to live on campus.  Exceptions are students over 21 years of age and/or married students.  Freshmen and sophomores may petition to live off campus if they believe there are extenuating circumstances that would merit departure from the stated requirement to live on campus.

Juniors and seniors:  Room contracts can be cancelled by juniors and seniors without penalty if contracts are cancelled my July 1 for fall semester and December 1 for Winter Term and or spring semester.
Are there specific items that are not allowed in the residence hall rooms?

Candles, incense, toasters, ovens, hotplates and halogen lamps are not allowed in the Residence Halls for safety reasons.
What furniture is provided in the residence hall rooms?

A standard 2 person room comes equipped with 2 beds, 2 dressers, 2 wardrobes and 2 desks.
My student plans to have a couch in his/her room.  What are the room dimensions?

Room dimensions vary depending on the building and room classification (i.e. two person, semi-private, private).  To get the exact dimensions for your room, call the Residence Life Office at 641-784-5107.
How can my student change their house membership?

A letter requesting a house change stating the reasons for making the change is to be submitted to the Hall Director.
How does my student get something fixed in their room?

A direct call may be made to the Facility Services Office my dialing x5191 on campus.   If the work is not completed in a timely fashion, your student should report the problem to their building Hall Director.
What does my student do if they have a problem with their Internet connection or cable TV?

Report these problems to the ITS Help Desk my calling x5167 from a campus phone.
How does my student appeal visitation or noise violations?

Written appeals will be accepted in the Residence Life Office (MSC room 29) within one week of the violation.
How does a student report stolen property?

The Dean of Student's Office will assist you in filling out a report of stolen property.  Information will be distributed to Hall Directors and others who may be able to assist.
Where is Lost and Found located?

Check with the Dean of Student's Office or the Student Activities Office if your student has misplaced an item.
