HEALTH SERVICES - FAQ'S

Q: Does the nurse write notes for excused absences from class due to illnesses?
A: No, students are advised to call or e-mail their instructors to explain their absence. The nurse in SHS will verify that the student visited SHS for an evaluation of an illness, if the student suggests to the instructor that he/she calls for that reason.

Q: Can the nurse put a student on the Dean of Students e-mailed list of excused students?
A: That is done only in extreme situations which usually require hospitalization or a trip home. A student can call the Dean of Students office themselves when ill. They will be listed as self reported.

Q: How much does it cost to see the nurse?
A: There is no charge to see the nurse. There is a minimal charge for lab. Tests and x-rays.

Q: Is an appointment needed to see the nurse?
A: No. Student Health Services is a walk-in clinic.

Q: Will SHS file with my health insurance to cover the costs of lab. Tests or x-rays?
A: SHS only processes the Student Insurance bought through Graceland. The student is given a receipt with all the information needed to file a claim with an insurance company.

A:  No.  When a student needs to see a doctor, an appointment can be made at one of the local clinics.
