PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS
Founding Member of the Iowa Research and Education Network (IREN) (September 1992). IREN is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to advance education, research and public service by assisting in the exchange of information among research and educational institutions via high-speed data communication techniques, and by assisting those institutions to access various educational resources. I have served as an elected member of the IREN Board from its formation until the present time. From early 1993 to mid-1994, I served as IREN's Secretary, and have served as IREN President from July 1997 until September, 2000. I have worked on several special projects--some paid and some volunteer--to advance the ICN and data networking among Iowa's public schools. As a result of these associations, I am well known within K-12 and higher education circles in the state.
Invited Member of a couple ICN-related task forces (1999). One was an advisory group providing input to Iowa Public Television, in response to a governor’s task force recommending the development of a state-wide directory of distance learning offerings, including but not limited to the ICN. Another was an advisory group providing input to management of the Iowa Communications Network, regarding technical and policy solutions to capacity-related scheduling issues on the ICN.
Invited Member of the State of Iowa Libraries On-Line (SILO) Advisory Board (1997-98). This advisory board was convened in October 1997 to provide vision and input to technology projects of the State Library of Iowa. Other planning activities are forthcoming.
Appointed Member of a statewide General Government Work Group, under the State Public Policy Group (Fall 1996). I was the sole private sector member of this work group. The General Government Work Group was one of five task groups collaborating to produce an Intergovernmental Information Technology & Telecommunications (IITT) Plan (December 1996). The report specifically focused on the use of the ICN as an enabling technology. Our results were subsequently delivered to the Governor of the State of Iowa in February 1997 as part of a larger report entitled, “State of Iowa IITT Plan, Roadmap to a Responsive Government: Using Technology to Create a Seamless Government.”
Invited Member of a five-person National Science Foundation grant review team in Washington, D.C. (May 1995). I was invited to participate based on my successful experience as the Principal Investigator of Graceland’s own NSFNET Connections grant. I have served on three subsequent teams to review NSFNET Connections grant requests of other institutions.
