PERIODICALS DEPARTMENT

The F.M. Smith Library maintains a collection of 817 periodicals. There are 455 current  subscriptions, and 75 titles available only in electronic form. The Periodicals Collection is located on the main floor.  Current issues of popular magazines, periodicals and newspapers are displayed separately in the Current Periodicals area.  Paper issues of 11 newspapers are displayed on racks in a corner of the Current Periodicals area.  Newspapers are retained for 2 months and are kept behind the circulation desk.  They may be checked out for use within the library.   Back issues of periodicals and magazines in paper are shelved alphabetically by journal title near the main floor study area. Periodicals stored on microfilm or microfiche are housed in cabinets adjacent to the periodical shelves.

Publications relating to the Community of Christ and local history in microfilm are housed in a separate cabinet next to the green microform cabinets.  The library contains a complete collection of the Saints Herald, the publication of the sponsoring church.  A separate catalog for this publication is located at the north end of the main floor.

Periodical titles can be searched on LIBBIE, Graceland’s online catalog.  The holdings screen informs patrons if the periodical is print, or stored in microfilm or microfiche.  It also indicates for which years the title is available in the library.  Several periodical databases, which provide the full text of articles, are available, through the library website. The Periodicals holding screen also contains a link to the Ebscohost periodical databases. LIBBIE indicates which journals are available in the library.

Periodical Holdings Lists are located above the reference shelves.  They include a complete alphabetical list and a separate list of titles arranged by subject.  The subject list indicates the format of the title (microfiche, microfilm, paper, and full text availability on periodical databases) and the years for which the title is available in the library.

Periodicals may not leave the library.  There are photocopiers located on the main floor near the circulation desk and microfiche/film reader/printers next to the microform cabinets.

The library works with faculty to select new periodicals representing all major fields of study offered at Graceland.  Suggestions or requests for additions to the collection may be addressed to Diane Shelton, Director of Library Services or Betsy Folkins, Periodicals Department.
