09-01-03 Yellowjackets Upset Nationally Ranked Pirates
The Lady Yellowjackets opened their season with an emphatic 8-2 win over the current 7th ranked team in the country.

Zulema Martinez, from Brownsville, Texas, lit up the night with some tantalizing runs and shots scoring three goals in the first half, and did not play in the second half of the match. Jocelyn Jentsch, from Harlingen, Texas, scored the first of her goals for the season with a trademark bullet into the top corner. Lara Guscott, from Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada, had two goals and always looked a threat in front of the opposition’s goal.

“This was a considerable all round team performance with every player in the team performing to the best of their abilities,” says Women’s Soccer Coach Kevin Sherry. “It was evident that every player understood their role on the team and had the discipline to stick to their job - hence the amazing team performance which led to seven goals in the first half.”

Jennifer Holm, Maniesha Monro, Amanda Sundell and Tara Stavlic were injured and therefore did not play in the home opener.

Tonight the Graceland University Women's Soccer Team opens its season with Park University. We welcome the players, coaches and supporters of Park University to Lamoni and hope they enjoy their stay with us this evening. This is as tough an opening game as there can possibly be. Park University is ranked 7th in the nation, were last years Region IV champions and did very well in the National Tournament. Tonight’s game will be an excellent yardstick with which to measure our improvement against. Park is one of the top teams in the country and it is in these lofty surroundings that we wish Graceland University to be playing at. An old coach used to say to me, "If you want to be the best, then play the best." Our schedule is built around this philosophy. I am too confident of a coach to be worried about winning records. When I first came here Graceland was ranked outside of the top 150. In my first year we raised our ranking to 86 and now after a good season last year, beating many teams who are above us in the rankings, we stand at 56. We are by no means happy to stop there. Our goal is to break into the top 25 and then become a power on a National scale. We have had a good pre season and even though the varsity squad of 23 is made up of 50% freshman, I believe this team will take us to the next level and achieve it's goal. The team is young but they are the fastest learners I have ever coached. The experienced players have made the new players feel very welcome and the support each member of the team has for each other is inspiring. The Lady Yellowjackets have come a long way in such a short space of time and the future looks very bright. Your support is much appreciated and without you we would not be where we stand today. Thank You! —Kevin Sherry
