Outdoor Day One (5-25-07)

Five Events Down and Brummit Hangin Tough

May 24, 2007

Fresno, CA-
After day one of competition at the NAIA National Track and Field Championships, Graceland University men’s track standout Ben Brummit has completed half of the events in the outdoor decathlon. With the final five events on tap for Friday, Brummit will continue to press onward in hopes of earning All-American status.

Competing on the campus of Fresno Pacific University, Brummit is joined by two other track and field athletes representing the Yellowjackets along with head coach Kent Allshouse.

James Thomas and Jaclyn Keil will both be competing later on today, Thomas in the 100 meter dash and Keil in the women’s 5K. Both runners will hope to advance to the finals of their respective events which could last until Saturday.

An All-American during the indoor track and field season in the heptathlon, Brummit has his sights on another top finish in the decathlon. Beginning with the 100-meter dash event of the rigorous ten-stage event, Brummit posted a solid eighth place finish with a time of 11.82 seconds. Next he would travel to the long jump pit and register a seventh place finish in that event with a length of 21’.075” (6.42 meters).

Up next on the schedule was the shot put which most likely ranks as Brummit’s weakest event in which he placed 14th with a final throw of 9.94 meters.

Somewhat down but certainly not out, Brummit continued on with his final two events on Thursday. In the high jump stage, Brummit stormed back into overall contention with an impressive third-place standing with a height of 6’2.75” (1.9 meters). Finally, wrapping up a long first day of competition, Brummit finished with a time 51.73 in the 400-meter dash finals in the fifth event of the day.

Coming up on Friday’s schedule are the following events: 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and finally with the 1500-meter run.
