Track and Field Teams Compete at Dick Young Classic

Hitting the road once again, the Graceland University men’s’ and women’s track teams took part in the Dick Young Classic over the weekend on the campus of Grinnell College. With over seventeen teams competing, both the men and women’s teams performed well with the men taking fourth overall with 59 points.

As both teams prepare for the upcoming NAIA national outdoor championships next month, the Dick Young Classic was a solid meet due to the high number of participants and a mix of NCAA and NAIA participants.

Men’s Peak Performers

James Thomas, a dual-sport standout for GU in both track and football, continued to perform well as he finished second in the 100-meter dash by winning his heat and then posting a 10.68 seconds time in the final, finishing second to Nebraska Wesleyan’s Gordie Coffin who came in at 10.64 seconds.

Karim Martin, a junior for head coach Kent Allshouse, put together an impressive day by tallying a 10th place finish in the 200-meter dash (23.37) and a fifth place standing in the 400-meter dash (49.93). Upperclassman Heath Brown and Luke Henry both produced solid runs in the 800-meter run by coming in fourth and fifth respectively at 1:57.46 and 157:59.

Sophomore Rosche Hepburn paced four Yellowjacket runners in the 400-meter hurdles by notching an eight place finish at 58.59 seconds. Junior James Bailey placed 11th in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:33.14.

Dillon Domingo, a mutli-event performer and a freshman, finished ninth overall in the men’s long jump with a final jump of 21-6 ¾. Aundrae Williams, a freshman standout, posted an impressive second-place finish in the men’s high jump with a standing of 6-3 ½. Andrew Williams place fourth while Martin MCiccolini and Ben Brummitt placed seventh and 11th respectively.

Ryan Birks tallied a a 13-5 ¼ best in the men’s pole vault which was good enough for fifth place in the Dick Young Classic.

Women’s Peak Performers

With fewer athletes competing, the Graceland women’s team finished 11th at the Dick Young Classic with eight points total.

Amanda Batey paced three GU performers in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:25.63 which placed her ninth overall in the competition. Allison Emslie and Kristin Osborn, both sophomores also place in the top 20.

Megan Neeley and Nikki Peterson finished back-to-back in the women’s 400-meter hurdles at ninth and tenth place with a time of 73.20 and 73.36. Freshman Razanna Robinson posted a height of 4-11 in the high jump which was good enough for seventh in the competition while Jordie Currie, a senior, placed fourth overall in the women’s pole vault with a jump of 9-6 ¼.

Nebraska Wesleyan also took home team honors in the women’s competition.
