5-1-06 Men’s Tennis Wins Region V Championships Head To Nationals In Alabama
On Saturday April 29, 2006 in St. Louis Coach Jerry Hampton lead the Graceland University Men’s Tennis Team to a victory over Benedictine College.The match started with doubles play as Graceland’s Mario Paz/Carlos Cordova vs. Arabyan/Pieters of Benedictine, match went to Benedictine 8-1. Second match for Graceland was Ricardo Lau/Brett Waite vs. Nunez/Hikel, match went to Benedictine 8-5. Third match was Luis Rodriguez/Thomas Brodbeck vs. Garcia/Montesi, match went to Graceland 8-1. After doubles play Graceland was down in the overall match 2-1.
In singles play first to finish was Waite vs. Nunez, Waite took the match 2-0 and Graceland had tied the overall match 2-2. Second finish was Brodbeck vs. Hikel with Brodbeck taking the match 2-0 putting Graceland ahead 3-2 in the overall match. Third match to finish was Rodriguez vs. Pieters with Pieters coming up with the win and Benedictine tying the overall match 3-3. At this point Graceland had three players remaining with the Regional V Championship on the line. Jose Alaniz vs. Montessi finished with Alaniz coming from behind to take the match 2-1, putting Graceland up 4-3 in the overall match. Cordova vs. Garcia was the closest match of the day. Cordova one the first set 7-6, Garcia came back and won the second set 6-7. The third set of the match could give Graceland the advantage and the points needed to win the overall match. Cordova came up victorious by winning the third set 6-4. Lau vs. Arabyan finished with a DNF(did not finish). The win by Cordova gave Graceland the points needed to win the match.
The win sealed the NAIA Region V Championship and a bid to nationals in Mobile, Alabama beginning May 15. “I marvel at how young these guys are, and how much maturity they showed in one of the toughest matches Graceland has ever had,” said Coach Jerry Hampton of his players. “A great deal of credit has to go to my assistant coach Izo Zunic and my student coach Andres Romero,” Hampton added. In the 6 years that nationals has had a team competition format, Graceland has competed four times. This will be Graceland’s 17th national appearance.
02-25-06 Graceland Men’s Tennis Beats Oklahoma Baptist 5-4
The Graceland men’s tennis team picked up their third win of the season this weekend in St. Joseph, Mo., with a 5-4 victory over Oklahoma Baptist University.Ricardo Lau led the team with a 6-3, 6-0 No. 1 singles win, and Carlos Cordova picked up the No. 4 singles win by a score of 6-3, 6-3. In the No. 5 spot, Thomas Brodbeck won 6-1, 6-1. Mario Paz and Cordova won the top doubles match 8-5, while Brodbeck and Luis Rodriguez won the third 8-5.
Graceland is now 3-1 on the season and will play Drake University on March 1 at 1 p.m. in Des Moines, Iowa.

02-25-06 Graceland Women’s Tennis Plays Oklahoma Baptist
The Graceland women’s tennis team lost 0-9 to Oklahoma Baptist University Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph, Mo.In doubles, Graceland’s Terra Paialii and Regina Huet lost 8-0 and Jamie King and MacKenzie Fix lost the second set 8-4. Huet, Graceland’s No. 1 singles player, lost 6-3, 1-6, 5-10 to OBU’s Sarah Haselwood. Paialii lost 6-3, 6-2 and King dropped her match 6-2, 6-1.
Graceland next plays at Drake on Wednesday, March 1 at 1 p.m.

On Saturday, the Graceland women’s tennis lost 9-0 to the University of Nebraska Omaha in Omaha.In singles, Graceland’s Maribel Balandrano lost 6-7, 6-3 in the top spot, while Regina Huet and Terra Paialii each lost 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. MacKenzie Fix lost 6-1, 7-5 and Ariana Bytyci lost 6-0, 6-0.
Balandrano and Huet lost the top doubles set 8-0 and Paialii and Fix lost the No. 2 doubles 8-0.

02-11-06 Yellowjacket Men’s Tennis Win Two in Pella
The Graceland men’s tennis team beat Central College 8-1 and Wartburg College 9-0 Saturday in Pella, Iowa. Graceland is now 2-1 for the spring season.Graceland swept Central in singles, as Carlos Cordova and Mario Paz took charge of the No. 1 spot with an 8-6 win. Ricardo Lau and Brett Waite won 9-7 in the second set and Thomas Brodbeck and Luis Miguel Rodriguez won the third 8-3. Lau, Waite and Jose Alaniz won the first three singles sets while Brodbeck and Cordova took the victory in the fifth and sixth matches.
The Yellowjackets were a perfect 9-0 against Wartburg College later in the afternoon. Waite and Lau won the No. 1 set as Alaniz and Juan Carlos held down the 8-2 win as the No. 2 team. Rodriguez and Brodbeck rounded out the doubles matches with an 8-0 victory.
Graceland next plays on Feb. 25 against Oklahoma Baptist University and Benedictine College in St. Joseph, Mo.

02-05-06 Tennis Opens Spring Season Against UMKC
The Graceland men’s tennis team opened the 2006 spring season on Sunday playing the University of Missouri-Kansas City in the Knapp Tennis Center at Drake University. The Yellowjackets lost 4-5 to the Division I Kangaroos.Brett Waite and Ricardo Lau posted the only doubles win for Graceland, as they defeated Jon and Justin Ghani 9-8, 7-3. In singles, Jose Alaniz defeated Jon Ghani 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 while Mario Paz defeated Justin Ghani 7-5, 6-3. Freshman Thomas Brodbeck beat Joe Kane 6-2, 6-2 for Graceland’s final win of the day.
The Jackets next play Central College and Wartburg College on Feb. 11 in Pella, Iowa. The matches are set to begin at 8:45 a.m.

10-15-05 Graceland Men Compete at ITA National Small College Tennis Championships
Graceland’s Ricardo Lau, Mario Paz and Carlos Cordova traveled to Fort Myers, Fla. this weekend to play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Championship held at Florida Gulf Coast University.On Thursday at 8 a.m., Lau lost to Mislav Hizak from Embry Riddle 6-0, 6-0 in his first round of singles play. On Friday Lau lost 7-5, 6-4 to Francisco Redondo from Freed-Hardeman. In his seventh place game on Saturday, Lau lost 6-3, 6-3 to Luke Helm from Indiana Wesleyan.
The Yellowjacket men’s tennis doubles team of Paz and Cordova lost to Boris Bakalov and Tom Jelsma from Azusa Pacific 6-1, 6-2 on Thursday. Thursday afternoon Paz and Cordova lost 6-4, 6-4 to Christian Gerloff and Jonathan Bowman from Point Loma Nazarene. In the seventh place game Paz and Cordova took a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Mike Rose and Patrick Bruining from Aquinas.
The 2005 ITA National Small College Tennis Championships, which date back to 1986, are being hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University for the second straight year. This event, the only of its kind in collegiate athletics, features the top men's and women's players in the nation from NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges.
National champions for men's and women's singles and doubles are determined in each division during the first two-and-a-half days of play. Those champions then compete to become the overall national small college champs (for all divisions) on Oct. 15-16 in the ITA "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis. Friday's play will consisted of semifinal singles (and consolation semifinals) and final round doubles action.
As the governing body of collegiate tennis the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievements of the collegiate tennis community. The ITA, which was founded in 1956 and is based in Skillman, N.J., administers numerous regional and national championships, the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit, presented by the USTA, and the ITA Rankings for men's and women's tennis at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior College levels. The ITA also has a comprehensive awards program for players and coaches to honor excellence in academics, leadership and sportsmanship. The official ITA website is www.itatennis.com.
10-06-05 Tennis to Play Mixed Doubles Against Johnson County
Today the Graceland tennis team will host Johnson County Community College at 3:30 p.m. at the McKain Tennis Complex.The teams will play women’s and men’s singles and doubles, and will end with mixed doubles.

09-28-05 Graceland Men’s Tennis Dominates ITA Regional
The Graceland men’s tennis dominated the ITA Central Regional held at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan. on October 24.In men’s doubles, Graceland had three teams advance to quarterfinals and two teams won in semifinals to create an all-Yellowjacket ITA doubles championship, comprised of three freshmen and one sophomore. Carlos Cordova and sophomore Mario Paz defeated Brett Waite and Richardo Lau 8-6 to win the 2005 Wilson/ITA Fall Regional Championships.
In singles, all 10 players advanced past the first round and four Yellowjackets played in the Sweet 16, including Thomas Brodbeck, Brett Waite, Richardo Lau and Luiz Miguel Rodriguez. Ricardo Lau came away victorious in the singles championship defeating Abdel Karim El Drissi from Lindenwood University 6-2, 6-4.
Cordova, Lau and Paz will compete in the ITA National Championship at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla. from Oct. 12 through Oct. 16.
“Our performance with seven freshmen, two sophomores, one junior and one senior was outstanding,” according to Coach Jerry Hampton. “We beat some good schools and our performance was even better than I expected from such a young group of players.”
09-28-05 Women’s Tennis Advances to Semifinals at ITA Regional
Two members of the Graceland women’s tennis team reached the semifinals of the ITA Central Championships last weekend at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan.Freshman Maribel Balandrano and senior Vanessa Flores each reached the semifinal match of both the singles and doubles ITA Central Regional. Balandrano and Flores both lost in split sets in singles and reached the doubles semifinals as a pair. In doubles, the ladies beat a team from Baker 8-2 before falling 8-6 to Luisa Machias and Liana Burrows from Lindenwood University.
In singles, Balandrano lost 3-6, 8-6, 2-6 to Machias, who was the eventual singles champion. Flores won matches over players from Missouri Valley, Lindenwood and the University of Illinois Springfield before being defeated 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 by Marti Eidson from Baker University.
“The women’s performance was probably the best we’ve had at the ITA tournament,” according to Coach Jerry Hampton. “I’m very pleased with how our women played this weekend.”
09-27-05 Women’s Tennis Shows Improvements in Simpson Match
The Graceland women’s tennis team showed great improvements from last season in matches against Simpson College on Tuesday afternoon. Simpson won the match 6-3, but Graceland’s coaches were pleased with the play of the Yellowjackets.“Even though we lost this match, I was delighted with the desire our players showed,” said Izo Zunic, assistant tennis coach at Graceland. “The team has improved their game, but we are still far away from where we want to be. With quality practice and hard work we will create an excitement for women’s tennis at Graceland which will bring us more and more wins.”
Senior Vanessa Flores and freshman Maribel Balandrano beat the Davis/Brannon pair 8-6 for in the number one doubles match, and both Flores and Balandrano won their singles matches 6-3, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2, respectively. Regina Huet was defeated 6-7, 1-6 in singles and along with partner Terra Paialii lost 3-8 in doubles. Hanna Salter and Pam Gerteisen lost 5-8 in doubles and in singles Salter was defeated 0-6, 3-6 and Salter took a 1-6, 4-6 loss.
The Graceland women’s tennis team next plays Central College this Saturday at 10 a.m. in Pella, Iowa.
