05-02-05 All-Conference Scholar-Athletes
The Heart of America Athletic Conference has recognized 32 Graceland University athletes as All-Conference Scholar-Athletes for 2004-05.
The Yellowjacket softball, women’s track and football teams led the way with four scholars each, followed by the women’s volleyball, men’s track, men’s cross country and men’s soccer teams with three scholar-athletes apiece.

04-05-05 Graceland Men’s Tennis Cruises Through Conference Home Opener
The Graceland men’s tennis team defeated William Jewell College 9-0 Tuesday afternoon in Lamoni, Iowa. The Jackets are now 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Simon Ouellet started the day off right with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the first singles match, followed by Izo Zunic winning 6-0, 6-1 in the second. Ricardo Lau took the third match 6-0, 6-0 and Jose Alaniz won 6-2, 6-2 in the fourth. Mario Paz and Andres Romero each won their matches, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-1 respectively.
In doubles, Ouellet and Zunic won 8-2 in the top match. Paz and Lau also won 8-2 and Alaniz and Alvaro Dominguez took the third doubles match 8-1.
The men host conference rival Lindenwood University on Saturday, April 9 at 10:00 a.m. on the McKain Tennis Courts.
Results04-05-05 Flores Victorious Against Jewell
Vanessa Flores won the number one singles match 6-2, 7-5 against William Jewell College Tuesday in Lamoni, Iowa.
Regina Huet played a close match in the second position, but came up short by scores of 3-6, 4-6. Hannah Salter played 1-6, 1-6 in the fifth spot, and Pam Gerteisen, Aida Bytyci and Kasey Johnson all dropped their matches 0-6, 0-6.
In doubles, Flores and Huet played to 5-8 and Johnson and Salter 3-8, but both were on the losing end of the battle. Bytyci and Gerteisen lost 0-8 in the number two doubles spot.
The women host conference rival Lindenwood University on Saturday, April 9 at 10:00 a.m. on the McKain Tennis Courts.
Results10-18-04 Ouellet and Zunic 5th at Nationals
Graceland tennis seniors Simon Ouellet and Izudin Zunic placed 5th at the 2004 ITA National Small College Championships presented by the USTA in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Ouellet and Zunic started the tournament with a 2-6, 2-6 loss to the top ranked doubles team Azusa Pacific, but regained their spirit to beat the Indiana-Southeast team 6-7, 6-1 10-7. In the consolation match, the Yellowjackets outplayed the third ranked Azusa Pacific team 6-4, 7-5 to take fifth place in the national tournament.
10-14-04 Graceland Tennis Duo To Play at Nationals
Senior tennis players Izudin Zunic and Simon Ouellet are off to represent themselves and Graceland University at the National ITA Tournament in Ft. Meyers, Fla.
Zunic and Ouellet will face the top seeded team in the nation in the first round of the tournament.
The men won the Central Regional ITA tournament on September 24-25 in a thriller of a championship game. Graceland defeated Benedictine College in the finals 9-8, 11-9.
10-09-04 Zunic and Ouellet Tennis Champions
Yellowjacket seniors Izo Zunic and Simon Ouellet won the Western Illinois University Men’s Doubles Invitational Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Alvaro Dominguez Bermejo and junior Jose Alaniz placed third in the tournament.
“We really did very well in the tournament,” said Coach Jerry Hampton. Hampton also said the other two Graceland teams were knocked out by Yellowjacket teammates on their way to the championship round.
09-29-04 GU Tennis Teams Clean Founders’ Lake
The Graceland tennis teams cleaned the moss from Founders’ Lake on Wednesday, in preparation for Homecoming weekend.
Coach Jerry Hampton, with no shoes and pants rolled to his knees, used rakes to pull the moss off of the water along the edges of the lake. A few players were daring enough to take off their shoes and jump in the lake with Hampton to help rake.
The tennis teams are near the conclusion of their short fall season, and are looking forward to success this spring.
09-21-04 Graceland Men’s Tennis Out-Plays Northwest Missouri State
The Graceland men’s tennis team beat Northwest Missouri State University 6-3 Tuesday afternoon in Lamoni, Iowa. The Jackets were lead by number one player Simon Ouellet’s 6-4, 7-5 win over Hernique Thomas. Other singles winners for Graceland include Andres Romero, Guillermo Ripoll and Mario Paz.
The Yellowjackets head to Kansas City this weekend for the Central ITA Championships.

05-24-04 Gimenez and Gonzalez Receive All-American Awards
The NAIA recognized Graceland University’s Pablo Gimenez as a 2004 Second Team Men’s Tennis All-American and both Gimenez and Miguel Gonzalez as 2004 Daktronics-NAIA Men's Tennis All-America Scholar-Athletes. This is Pablo’s second year receiving both All-American and All-America Scholar-Athlete awards and Miguel’s second year to receive All-America Scholar-Athlete recognition.
Gimenez, a senior from Sucre, Bolivia, is majoring in international business and advertising. The past two years Pablo was the ITA Regional Tennis Champion and ITA Regional Doubles Tennis Champion, along with All-American, All-Conference and All-Region Scholar-Athlete accolades. As of April 19, 2004 Gimenez was ranked #13 in the nation in singles and #15 in doubles. As a junior, Pablo was ranked 7th in the nation in singles and ranked 8th in the nation in doubles.
Gonzalez, from Caracas, Venezuela, is majoring in Computer Science Information Technology and Business Administration. As a Yellowjacket, Miguel was a Heart of America Conference Tennis Champion, a Regional Tennis Champion, a national tennis qualifier, an NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete and is a member of ALPHA CHI--National College Honor Scholarship Society. In 2001-02 Gonzalez was a Conference and Regional Champion and a national qualifier.
Graceland finished the season ranked #20 in the nation, and 1st in the Region. The Jackets were crowned both Heart of America and Region V Champions for the 2004 spring season.
05-24-04 Men’s Tennis Team Ends Season at National Tournament
The Graceland University men’s tennis team was defeated 6-3 by Lee University from Tennessee in the opening-round match at the 2004 NAIA Men’s Tennis National Championship being held at the Mobile Tennis Center in Alabama.

04-25-04 Graceland Men’s Tennis Regional Champions
The Graceland men’s tennis team beat Baker University 5-0 to win the Region V Tennis Championship held in St. Joseph, Mo. The Yellowjackets beat McKendree College 5-1 and the University of Springfield in Illinois 5-0 in the first two games of the tournament.
Next week, the men plan to play Northwest Missouri State University on May 5 in Maryville, Mo. The Jackets travel to Mobile, Ala. on May 15 to play in the National Tournament, which is on May 17-21.

The Graceland women’s tennis team concluded the 2003-04 season with a loss in the first round of the Regional Tournament to McKendree College 2-7 on April 23. The ladies also dropped the last regular season match to William Jewell College 0-9 on April 17. The Jackets ended the year 1-11.

04-05-04 Men’s Tennis Goes .500 During Spring Break Week
The Graceland University men’s tennis team won three and lost three matches during spring break last week. The Jackets beat Truman State University 8-1, Washburn University 6-3 and Benedictine College 7-2.
Two of the three losses were to NCAA Division II nationally ranked schools, including #10 Drury University and #13 Southwest Baptist. The other loss was to Rockhurst University, which is also an NCAA D-II school.
Graceland is now 12-4 on the season and ranked #18 in the NAIA.

03-23-04 Graceland Women’s Tennis Picks up First Win
The Graceland University women’s tennis team picked up their first win of the season on Tuesday, March 23 with a 9-0 win over Missouri Valley College. The women lost three matches in the St. Louis, Mo. area the past weekend, losing 3-6 to Lindenwood, 2-7 to the University of Illinois-Springfield and 0-5 to Washington University in St. Louis.
The women play at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo. on April 4 and host Baker University on April 6.

03-23-04 Graceland Men’s Tennis Steps to 9-1 on the Season
The Graceland University men’s tennis team is now 9-1 for the 2004 spring season, with the only loss coming from the 7th ranked team in NCAA Division III. Most recently Graceland was ranked 16 in the NAIA national polls.
In the past week, Graceland beat Missouri Valley College in Lamoni, the University of Illinois-Springfield and Lindenwood University on the road, but lost to Washington University in St. Louis.

03-09-04 Graceland Tennis Triumphs
The Graceland men’s tennis team beat Johnson County Community College 5-4 Tuesday in Overland Park, Kan. even though Graceland’s top doubles team and top three singles players lost.
To start the day, Pablo Gimenez and Simon Ouellet (#17 in the nation) lost their doubles match 6-8, but the second and third doubles teams both picked up wins for the Jackets.
“Our number one doubles team lost,” says Coach Jerry Hampton. “That just doesn’t happen very often.”
In singles, Gimenez (#7) lost his third set in a tie-break, Ouellet (#34) lost in his third set, and Andres Romero lost in two, but Jose Alaniz, Kabinga Pande and Alvaro Dominguez each picked up wins for Graceland to help the Jackets get the win over the nationally renowned JCCC junior college team.
“Our number one singles, number two singles and number one doubles teams all lost, but we still got the win,” says Coach Hampton. “The depth that we have on this team is what won it for us today.”

03-09-04 Women’s Tennis Team Excels
The Graceland University women’s tennis team lost 2-7 to Johnson County Community College Tuesday in Overland Park, Kan., but played the best tennis of the season, according to Coach Jerry Hampton.
“I’m excited that Kerbie (Everett) is on a two-game winning streak,” says Hampton. “Each of the girls, not just Kerbie, played better today than they have all season.”
Vanessa Flores also tallied a win for the Yellowjackets against JCCC.

09-28-03 Gimenez Upholds Three-Peat at ITA Regional
Senior Pablo Gimenez upheld his title of ITA Men’s NAIA Central Regional Tournament Champion for the third year in a row on Sunday, September 28 in Kansas City, Mo.
Gimenez was the top seed in the tournament, having a bye in the first round, then beating five players to win the championship 6-1, 6-2 over Alim Mambatou from the University of Illinois in Springfield.
Mambatou beat Graceland’s Izo Zunic in the third round and Simon Ouellet in the semi-finals to make his way to the championship game against Gimenez.
Gimenez and Ouellet also won the doubles championship 8-2 over Henderson / Richey from Baker University. Graceland’s Andres Romero and Alvaro Domingez lost to the Baker duo in the quarterfinals.
Brooke Johnson and Kerbi Everett won the consolation game in the women’s doubles tournament. Vanessa Flores lost in the quarterfinal round of the singles tournament.
