Graceland University Softball Season Outlook 2009
The Graceland University Lady Yellowjacket softball team is anxiously awaiting the start of the 2009 season. The season promises to be quite exciting with the addition of three newcomers to the nucleus of returnees. This combination has already proven to be a tight-knit program. The Lady Jackets host a talented and dedicated roster with outstanding leadership abilities. Their academic accomplishments are elite in comparison to other teams throughout the Heart of America Conference and the nation. Their academic pride is second to none as they work just as hard off the field as on. High points of this season will include a powerful offensive attack backed up by a solid defense.
Although key players in Jennifer Soukeroff, Tanya Oystrick, Jodie Clarkson, and Carrie Wilson were lost last season, the 2008-2009 team returns with a wealth of experience in 15 returning players. In addition, three new players look to make their impression this season.
Leading the way this season will be seven seniors including 1st team all HAAC performer and NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete shortstop Bryn DeGraw (St Albert, AB), NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete centerfielder Carlene Nelson (Sherwood Park, AB), third/second base Lynette Fine (Bloomfield, IA), first base/catcher Kelsey Johansen (Hiawatha, KS), pitcher Sarah Lippold (Osceola, IA), third/second base Chantelle Daigle (Sherwood Park, AB), third base/catcher Maria Barwig (Surrey, BC) and outfielder (Kansas City, KS) Katie Mikulan.
Rounding up returnees will be senior junior Jessica Brady (Albia, IA), sophomore Cheyenne Proudfoot (St. Charles, IA), sophomore Caitlin Proudfoot (St. Charles, IA), and sophomore Jaymi Crozier (Melcher Dallas, IA).
Looking to make an impact on the team this season are red-shirt junior Jean Klamm (Barnard, MO) and red-shirt freshman Emily Jones (Union, IA). Joining the sister act this season is freshman outfielder Hayli Crozier (Melcher Dallas, IA) who looks to spice up the offense from the left side. Also looking to contribute are freshman Alyssa Smith (Niagara Falls, ON) and Cassie Still (Mt. Ayr, IA).
A tremendous trio of coaches looks to lead the way for this year's talented team. Bill Dudek remains as head coach. He has seen much success for Graceland athletics throughout the years in both assistant and head coaching positions. New to this year's staff is Clayton Braddock, an All-American quarterback for the Jackets. The Lady Jackets are excited at his joining of the team and look forward to the season. Also donating his time and knowledge this season will again be Jeff Douglas. He is a great addition to the team as he has proven himself a very successful coach. This season will also see Lee Spurgeon return to mentor the pitching staff.
Tanya Oystrick heads into this season in a new role. She takes on the role of Student-Assistant coach. We are excited to have her join us and are looking forward to a season that promises to be exciting and successful.
