2005-06 Graceland Men's Soccer Recruits

06-30-05 William Chrisman Grad Signs with Graceland Soccer

Kyle Youngstrom, a graduate of William Chrisman High School in Independence, Mo., has signed a letter of intent to play soccer for Coach Ivan Joseph and the Graceland University men’s soccer program.

“Kyle will look to join our varsity reserve players to develop his skills and psychical presence during his freshman year,” says Coach Joseph. “He will then make a run at the full squad his sophomore year. Kyle is a nice young man and we are excited to have him in the program.”

Kyle was an all-area honorable mention right midfielder for the Bears this season. He is on the national honor roll and is listed as a Who’s Who Among High School Students. Youngstrom is on the WCHS debate team, is the Student Council Vice President and a member of the pep club.

Kyle is the son of Janice and Kevin and the brother to Timothy. Kyle plans to study accounting and economics at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa.

04-11-05 Graceland University Signs Soccer Academy Student

  Hunter Re`, a senior at Blue Valley North High School (Overland Park, Kan.), has signed a letter of intent to play soccer for Graceland University in the fall of 2005.

Re` was the leading scorer for BVNHS with 14 goals this season His post-season awards include first team Eastern Kansas League, first team NEKSCA, second team all-state and second team All-Sun Country. Re` set a school record this season when he scored four goals in a single game.
Re` also plays on club and traveling soccer teams in the Kansas City area. In 2004-05 Re` is playing for the KC Legends club team, but he played the past three years with the Kansas City Nomads. Hunter played on the ODP State traveling team from 1997-2002, and played for club teams such as KC Legends, Odessey, KC Attack and Strike Force since 1994.

Re` holds a 3.0 GPA at BVNHS, and has been honored with the Presidential Community Service Award. He is an Eagle Scout and is a member of Young Life, RoughRiders, Project SOS and Holiday Families community service project.

Hunter is the son of Bruce and Jill Re’ of Overland Park, Kan.

03-02-05 Berning Signs With Graceland

Shawnee Mission Northwest senior Ben Berning has signed a letter of intent to play soccer for Graceland University beginning in the fall of 2005.

Berning is a five-foot-eleven-inch goal keeper for the Cougars of Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in Shawnee Mission, Kan. In 2004 he was a Sunflower League honorable mention player and the captain of his team.

“Ben will look to join a very competitive goaltending situation that will see him battle to take the wide open starting role from recently graduated Yellowjacket, Brian Benndorf,” continued Coach Joseph.

Berning excels in the classroom, too, as a Kansas Honors Scholar, with a perfect 4.0 grade point average, and membership in National Honors Society and Spanish National Honors Society. Ben’s extracurricular activities include SADD/STAND Club, Shawnee Mission Cotillion, Community Covenant Youth Group, Johnson/Wyondotte Counties Junior League Cotillion and SMNW Homecoming court.

“Ben has tremendous reflexes and is the type of athlete you recruit because he will make an immediate impact on the leadership of your team,” says Coach Ivan Joseph. “He is a true scholar-athlete and a driven and disciplined young man.”

Ben is the son of Bart and Leslie, and the brother to Grant.

01-25-05 Shawnee Mission West Duo Signs With Graceland Men’s Soccer

Shawnee Mission West seniors Nicholas Gay and Mike Myer have signed letters of intent to play for the 2005-06 Graceland University men’s soccer team.

“I am pleased with the signing of our first two recruits for the upcoming season,” says Graceland men’s soccer coach, Ivan Joseph. “Both Nick and Mike will immediately impact the team. Their speed is a tremendous asset and will greatly improve our team’s attacking and defending options.”

Nick, a six-foot-one-inch center back for the Vikings, was the Gatorade Player of the Year, Sunflower League Defensive Player of the Year, first team All-Sunflower League, All-Sun Country and All-Johnson County league selections and honorable mention KC All-Metro. He is the president of National Honor’s Society, and a member of Shawnee Mission Young Life, pep club, student government and Frisbee club. Academically, Nick received the NEKSCA All-Academic Distinguished Award and is a scholar-athlete on the honor roll, holding a 4.0 GPA.

Mike is a six-foot outside midfielder who plays for the Kansas Olympic Development Soccer Team, along with his duties at Shawnee Mission West. He was a first team All-Sunflower League, All-Sun Country and All-Johnson County league selection. He plays club soccer for the Nomads, is a 100-meter qualifier for the state track meet and holds the rank of black belt in karate. Mike has a 3.75 high school GPA.

“Nick will replace graduating All-American center back Benny Wagenaar, and Mike will look to challenge for a starting position on the flank or has the potential to be teamed up with All-American center forward Jesus Rodriguez.”

Nick, the son of Joanne Pyle and Robert Gay and brother to Cameron and Lauren, plays premier soccer for the Blue Valley Stars Soccer Club. He plans to major in pre-engineering and minor in computer science.

Mike is the son of Mark and Jane and the brother to Sarah, and will enroll in the business department at Graceland in the fall of 2005.
