Wendell Smith begins his first year as assistant varsity men’s basketball coach for the Yellow Jackets. Coach Smith has spent the past season coaching at Ridgeway High School in Ridgeway, MO.
Experience
Wendell returns to the Yellow Jacket family from the Northwest MO high school basketball scene. Wendell was hired as head coach of Ridgeway High School where he lead the varsity boys to a 19-8 record and a conference championship, jr. high boys to a 11-2 record and won the North Mercer championship, and the jr. high girls to a 8-4 record and also won the North Mercer championship. Wendell’s basketball know how comes from his father, Wendell Sr. who taught him the game of basketball at a young age. Wendell also thinks of current head coach Ted Quinn as his mentor who has had success at both the high school and the collegiate level. Both have passed a winning attitude and knowledge on to Wendell who will use it to help develop the players at Graceland University.
Honors
In his very first year as a head coach at Ridgeway, Coach Smith developed two all conference ball players and one honorable mention.
Coach Smith played his collegiate ball from 2002-2006 at Graceland. While at Graceland he was a HAAC all conference honorable mention his senior year. Coach Smith graduated from Robert E. Lee Senior High School in 2001, where he was a first team all conference, and first team all district, offensive MVP during his junior and senior year. He also lead his team to the regional tournament his senior year.
Education
Coach Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Health (K-12) from Graceland University in 2006.
Personal
Wendell Smith was born November 22, 1982 in Midland, TX. His parents are Wendell Sr. and Lisa Smith of Midland, TX. Wendell is the oldest of 4 siblings, Chris, Brian, Kendrick and Darien. He and his wife of 3 ½ months, Tiffany, reside in Lamoni, IA with their dog duce. Tiffany is the Senior Graphic Designer at Graceland (CMC).
