Return to Tradition, Indeed
After a tough 2002 season, new Head Coach Cris Welch and the Graceland Yellowjackets start the 2003 season with a 28-0 win over the Lindenwood University Lions on Saturday, Sept. 6 in Lamoni, Iowa.
The bleachers were packed and the crowd was hyped for the first game of the season. The tone was set with the first play of the game when Dante Johnson ran the opening kick off back 90 yards for the score. Danny Laguna’s extra point kick sprung the Jackets to a quick 7-0 lead. It was all Graceland from then on. The Yellowjacket offense, led by Tom Compos and Johnson lit up the sky with the passing attack. Compos went 10 for 20 with 103 yards and two touchdowns, with Johnson as the recipient of those touchdowns, totaling 65 receiving yards.
The defense, commanded by team co-captain Alan Linden, was explosive holding the Lions to zero points and two turnovers. Tony Ingram led the defense with five solo tackles.
With only seconds left in the game the Yellowjackets congratulated Coach Welch on the first win of the season with a Powerade bath. Following tradition, the Yellowjackets, led by the seniors, sang the Graceland fight song to the enduring fans.
Graceland’s next challenge will be against the Benedictine Ravens in Atchison, Kan., next Saturday, September 12, 2003 at 2:00 p.m.
