GU Baseball Signs NCAA Division I Transfer
July 6, 2007
Lamoni, IA-
As the off-season signings continue to pile up for the Graceland University baseball team, none might be more impressive than the signing of Kansas State University transfer Sean Smith.
A former standout at both Indian Hills Community College and St. Mary’s High School in St. Marys, Iowa, Smith comes to Graceland after enduring an injury-related redshirt season in 2007 with Kansas State University.

Blessed with great speed and the versatility to play many different positions, Smith was slated to be the Wildcats starting right-fielder before an injury cut short his season. With the Jacket’s graduating 12 players after the 2007 season, Smith could see time at a variety of positions for GU next spring.
“It’s not often you can sign a player of Sean’s caliber,” said head coach Brady McKillip. “His versatility an overall athleticism will make a great impact on our team next season no matter what position he plays,” continued the Jacket’s head coach.
Before choosing Kansas State, Smith spurned offers from schools such as the University of Iowa and the University of Evansville.
A two-year starter at IHCC under head coach Cam Walker, Smith compiled a .365 batting average with six homeruns as a freshman following that up with a .423 average and nine homeruns during his sophomore campaign. Playing mostly third-base, Smith was named an All-Region selection during both of his seasons at the junior college ranks.
A four-year letter winner while in high school, Smith competed on the diamond for head coach Jim Donahue at St. Mary’s High School. Named to the All-Conference listing during all four years and to the All-State squad during his junior and senior seasons, Smith spent most of his time as a catcher and a utility player.
Not only a standout on the diamond, Smith also lettered four years on the football team as well as the wrestling team. He was named a two-time All-State running back while being named a four-time All-District while earning two-years on the All-State wrestling squad.
Smith plans to continue toward his degree in the social sciences while attending Graceland beginning in the fall.
Sean is the son of Donald and Annette Smith and the brother to Brandon and Alexie.
