April 15, 2007

Atchison, KS-
After dropping a pair of games to Benedictine College on Saturday at home, the Graceland University baseball team rebounded for two well-played contests versus BC on Sunday and ended with a split. Senior Third-baseman Tyler Moe connected on his 223rd career hit in game two to become the all-time leader for career hits for GU.

The split decision brings the Yellowjackets season record to 17-23 and 5-16 in the highly-competitive Heart of America Athletic Conference. The Jackets have a few days off before hitting the diamond on Tuesday to square off against William Penn University in a non-conference nine-inning game in Okaloosa, Iowa.

Game One

Luis Perales received the starting nod for the Jackets on the mound in game one and responded with a very solid outing. Perales tossed 6 1/3 innings while allowing only three hits and three runs. He would be relieved by left-handed specialist John Stewart in the seventh.

The Jackets would drop the opener 4-3. Aaron Fuller continued to hit the baseball well for the Jackets as he put together a 2-3 performance in the opener while also scoring a run. Stewart took the loss on the mound for GU.

Game Two

Tyler Moe has been the Graceland starting third-baseman throughout his four years on campus and is already throughout the record books as one of the most productive and dependable players ever to done the Blue and Gold. Another career record came to fall on Sunday afternoon as he collected his 223rd hit to pass Nate Butler (2000-2003) as the all-time hit king in Yellowjacket baseball history.

Moe in total put together a 2-3 performance in game two as he led a Yellowjacket offensive attack that helped the Jackets to a 6-3 victory. Fuller continued his good work from the opening game with three more hits in four at-bats while driving in three runs. Speedy leftfielder Angel Suarez provided an offensive spark atop the batting order as he went 2-2 with two runs scored and two RBI’s.

Senior centerfielder Rudy Vallejos, an Ottawa, Ontario native, notched two doubles in the ballgame while also coming around to score two runs.

Right-hander Matt Beckenhaur gave GU a lift from the pitching perspective as he limited the Ravens to two earned runs and collected the win.
