Yellowjackets Drop Two to Benedictine College as Bats Stay Cold

April 14, 2007

Lamoni, IA-
Currently fighting through a rough stretch of their season, the Graceland University baseball team was unable to break out of their slump as they dropped two games to Benedictine on a chilly Saturday afternoon at North Park. Benedictine opened with a 5-0 shutout and followed with a 5-2 victory in game two.

The Jackets have dropped their past eight ballgames and don’t have long to recover as they turn around and travel to Benedictine College on Sunday to wrap up the series. Stuck on sixteen regular season wins, the Jackets overall record now stands at 16-22.

Game One

With the temperatures chilly, both team’s bats seem to be cold early on in the afternoon as both team’s starting pitchers kept the offenses relatively quiet. Chris Hayes, GU’s sophomore starter, held the Ravens to only two runs through five innings of play before they tacked on three more in the final two frames. Hayes allowed only two earned runs in his seven innings of work.

Leadoff hitter Angel Suarez collected two hits in three trips to the plate in game one while also stealing a base. Second-baseman Aaron Fuller and catcher Matt Proctor also collected a hit apiece while third-baseman Tyler Moe drew two walks.

Lefthander Ramesis Rosa was sensational on the hill for the Ravens while going the distance for the shutout.

Game Two

The second game of the double-header featured another solid outing by a Yellowjacket starting pitcher, however the GU offense could never quite get things going.

Tyler Wright, a 6’3” junior lefty has been one of the Jacket’s most dependable starters of late and once again proved his worth today on the hill. Wright went six innings before relief appearances by Anthony Carlo and John Stewart.

First-baseman Victor Tso came up with a couple of key hits in the game as he went 2-3 and added an RBI double to his credit. Adrian Kerr, GU’s starting right-fielder also notched two base-hits in the game and scored a run.

Shortstop Matt Calcagni made his return trip back to the starting lineup as he was forced out the past week or so due to injury. He responded with a 1-4 showing in game two while also scoring a run.
