Graceland Baseball Can’t Topple #24-Ranked William Jewell
April 11, 2007
Liberty, MO- The Graceland University baseball hit the road on Wednesday in what they hoped would be two solid road victories against William Jewell College, unfortunately, it turned out the other way around as the Cardinals swept the regular season series with the Jackets after posting victories in Lamoni on Monday afternoon.
The Yellowjackets dropped the opener 10-3 and lost the second game of the double-header by a final score of 7-5. With the pair of defeats, the Jackets overall record drops to 16-20 on the season and a 4-13 Heart of America Athletic Conference standing.
Game One Shortstop Aaron Fuller continued to do a solid job as the #2 hitter in head coach Brady McKillip’s everyday lineup by posting a 3-3 performance in the opener. The Jacket’s regular second-baseman during his tenure at Graceland, Fuller has been forced to make the switch over to shortstop due to the injury of fellow senior Matt Calcagni.
Tyler Moe, GU’s powerful hitting third-baseman continued to swing a hot stick as he blasted another homerun in the losing effort. His sixth big fly of the season and second in as many games, Moe contributed a 2-3 performance in game one. Senior catcher Matt Proctor chipped in an RBI double to round out the Jacket’s run-scoring attack.
Sophomore right-hander and Caracas, Venezuela native Luis Perales earned the mound duties in game one and never really found a rhythm. Perales tallied 3 2/3 innings before giving way to reliever Jason Bennett for the remaining 2 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.
Game Two
Tyler Moe continued his good work from the opening game as he tallied a two-run double to get the Jacket’s offense rolling. Adrian Kerr also added a double in the Jacket’s 7-5 loss.
Matt Beckenhaur notched the starting pitchers duties in the second game of the HAAC twinbill and did a serviceable job. Unfortunately, the Jacket’s defense was less than stellar in the nightcap as the Blue and Gold committed six errors which led to many of the Cardinals scoring opportunities. Southpaw John Stewart would enter the game for the final 1 1/3 innings out of the Yellowjacket bullpen.
The Jacket’s hope to be able to play over the weekend as they are scheduled to host Benedictine College in a Saturday afternoon double-header; but with weather conditions expected to be less than ideal for baseball, the game’s status is unsure. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14th at Lamoni’s North Park.
