Lee Spurgeon enters his second year as the Yellowjackets pitching coach. Lee has coached Girls ASA Softball, Pitching Clinics at high school and college level. For the past 20 years, he has been working with Iowa & Missouri girls in all aspects of the softball game, specializing in pitching. All their hard work has resulted in 22 girls receiving college scholarships. Six girls that Lee has coached in high school are pitching college softball in 2007. In the last 20 years, Lee’s teams have gone to state 14 times. While at state Lee’s teams have won first three times, finished second four times, finished third four titles, finished fourth twice, and finished fifth once, with many more girls ready to take their teams to state. The past few years, Lee has worked with girls from 13 school districts each year. His granddaughter started pitching at age six and is now a varsity pitcher for the Centerville Redettes.
In his own career, Lee has pitched fast pitched softball since 1956 without missing a single year. He recently bought a new ball glove for himself for Christmas because he is planning on playing for the rest of his life. He has played on teams in Iowa and Missouri for many years. Lee has played in 47 state tournaments, 5 regional tournaments, 18 national tournaments, and is planning on playing in many more. It is estimated that he has pitched in 2,500 to 3,000 ball games. Lee really enjoys teaching the girls how to pitch and is always ready to help anyone at anytime. The girls he has coached have given him the nickname Dr. Softball.
Lee currently resides in Moulton, Iowa and has three children: two sons and one daughter and five grandchildren.
