Lamoni, IA-Facing their biggest challenge on the season Saturday against undefeated, conference leader and #3 Lindenwood, the Jacket football team can hold their heads high with their effort on senior day.
Even though Graceland fell 53-21, the effort level and intensity was up and after trailing 33-7 at the 1:04 mark in the second quarter, the Jackets played toe-to-toe with Lindenwood in the second half.
The Jackets got big efforts from some of the departing seniors on their final game on Huntsman Field. Senior running back Jerome Messam (Brampton, Ontario) had his best game since week two as he rushed for 126 yards on 29 carries including two touchdown runs. Geoffrey Browning (Colorado Springs, CO) continued his strong play with both a long kickoff return that set up GU with great field position and a 76 yard touchdown catch from senior quarterback Zach Stuart (Neosho, MO). Browning ended the game with 3 catches for 95 yards and the touchdown and Stuart finished 8-15 for 151 yards through the air in 3 quarters of play.
Defensively Graceland was led by seniors Cameron Willkomm (San Diego, CA) and Martin Ciccolini (Los Angeles, CA) who finished with 12 and 7 tackles respectively. Ciccolini also had two pass breakups for the Jackets.
Graceland now stands at 3-6 overall and will finish out their season next week, on the road, in Atchison, KS against Benedictine College. Stay tuned to the Jacket athletics website for continuing coverage of the Yellowjacket football team and all of Jacket athletics.
