Baldwin City, KS-The GU men closed an often tumultuous regular season with a bitterly battled 0-0 tie with #16 Baker University in Baldwin City, KS. The Jackets outshot the highly regarded Wildcat side but even the addition of two overtimes could not produce any points between the two squads.
The Graceland defense was out in force tonight to protect the team's conference interests in the face of Baker's highly powered offense, and the Jacket backfield was up to the task, as was standout keeper Carlos Ortiz (Bogota, Colombia), who made seven saves on the evening.
While the Wildcat attack was blunted, the Graceland front could not find the net despite numerous tries on the Baker keeper, who was just as sharp as his Jacket counterpart, saving all twelve balls struck in his direction.
"We knew going in that this would be a very tough game, and I am proud of the way our guys played," said Coach Angel Monroy. "Baker is a very good team, and we played right with them all night; it was a consummate team effort in probably one of the most difficult games of the season. We have to wait to see how conference falls, and keep working hard for what we have ahead of us."
Graceland now stands at 9-6-1 overall and 5-3-1 in HAAC play, and will now wait to see how the conference picture translates into the playoff schedule.
