Lamoni, IA-The #9 ranked women's soccer team defeated Lindenwood tonight at Rasmussen Field, 5-1 in the last home game of the season.
The Jackets had the match under control for the whole of the evening, taking an early lead on senior midfielder Linsey Comley's unassisted strike in the 12th minute. The GU side kept that 1-0 lead into half, but the offense exploded in the second period, resulting in four more scores to Lindenwood's sole response.
Chelsea Phillips (Granada Hills, CA) managed yet another solid offensive performance for the Jackets, with her two goals coming in the second half of the match, while Gisela Arrieta (Valledupar, Colombia) added two of her own. Both Phillips and Arrieta also managed an assist each.
Senior keeper Leslie Danner (Raytown, MO) managed very well behind a solid defensive backfield and allowed one goal while saving three in the effort.
"Tonight the Graceland Lady Yellowjackets put the bow on a fantastic season by winning the HAAC Championship," said Coach Fred Wagenaar. "Not just the conference championship," he added, "but their 6th consecutive HAAC title. The ladies did it in style by beating a very good Lindenwood squad by four. It was senior night, and Linsey [Comley] celebrated by putting us ahead early with a very powerful shot. There is one game left in the regular season, and then we will move to the conference tourney to fight for a shot to head to nationals," concluded Coach Wagenaar.
Graceland now stands at 14-1-2 overall and 8-0 in HAAC play. Next up, the Jackets will face Baker University in Baldwin City, KS on Tuesday, November 3rd. That game is slated to begin at 5pm.
