Des Moines, IA-Graceland, on their last non-conference stretch before the post-season, were unable to complete a driving comeback attempt after falling behind, 0-2.
The first game of the match started badly for the GU side, who struggled to find an offensive rhythm in a 14-25 loss. The second game was characterized by a continuing struggle to capitalize on numerous Viking miscues, but Graceland was able force extra play for a 25-27 result.
Graceland found their groove in game three, however, and played inspired ball to defeat the Vikings 25-20. The Jackets continued their high level of play for the next two games, taking game four 27-25.
Grand View rose to Graceland's challenge in the fifth and final game, however. In a back and forth battle the Jackets could not put the Vikings away, and finally fell, 14-16.
"We played a super non-conference foe tonight; we did it on purpose to help refine our skills for the post season," said Coach Stew McDole. "We did not meet our expectations in games one and two, but the rest of the match was Graceland volleyball. We came back from two down and we were in control of our own destiny. It was great match; it was almost a great win," concluded Coach McDole.
The Jackets will play their last regular season match, on Wednesday, November 4th in Oskaloosa, IA against William Penn. That match is slated to start at 7:00pm. Stay tuned to the Graceland athletics website for news on the women's volleyball team and all Graceland athletics.
