Lamoni, IA-Graceland volleyball bid its seniors farewell in style in Lamoni, defeating Avila in three games. The match was prefaced by a short acknowledgment of the six seniors' contribution to the GU program before the the Jacket women were to do battle with the Eagles before a hearty Closson crowd.
The GU side had the match in hand from the very beginning, taking the first game 25-14. Avila showed that its side demanded due seriousness in the next game, however, making the score close before Graceland pulled out a 25-23 final. The last match was a masterpiece by the Jackets however, as the squad fed off of the crowd's energy and finished off their opponents, 25-9.
Seniors Molly Cornelison (St. Charles, IA), Savali Ta'amu (Seattle, WA), Lauren Hartnett (Camarillo, CA), Leti Talimatasi (Independence, MO), Ashley Guth (Avondale, AZ), and sixth-year soldier Maranda Miller (Holden, MO) each played with their typical confidence and moxie in their last turn in Lamoni, and the underclassmen matched their elders' intensity to deliver them the victory.
"This was an important win for us in the conference," said Coach Stew McDole, "Avila is a team which played seriously with everyone they have matched up against this year. They always make a match interesting because they refuse to give up on a contest. This victory sets us up very well for the post season, both standings-wise and because we played our game tonight, we executed well and got the result we wanted."
Graceland will take its last two regular season matches away, with the next coming Friday, October 30th in Des Moines, IA against Grand View. That match is slated to start at 7:00pm. Stay tuned to the Graceland athletics website for news on the women's volleyball team and all Graceland athletics.
