Lamoni, IA-The Graceland women's soccer team defeated the College of St. Mary's Saturday at Homecoming, with a score of 7-0 at Rasmussen Field in Lamoni. The Graceland women, now 10-1-2 on the season, clearly came ready to play on a frozen southern Iowa night.
Midfielder Shay Eskridge (Rowlett, TX) scored in the sixth minute to open up festivities, which was followed by two goals within five minutes by junior forward Chelsea Phillips (Granada Hills, CA). Graceland took that 3-0 lead into half, but they were not done by any means.
Gabriella Arrieta (Valledupar, Colombia) contributed two goals to start off the second period, in the 47th and 51st minutes respectively. Phillips scored yet again in the 61st minute to achieve a hat trick, while Eskridge put her second in the net to finish off the Flames with a score of 7-0.
St. Mary's managed only five shots on goal against Graceland's business-as-usual defensive backfield, while Graceland lived in the Flames' area, putting 17 in the vicinity of the net all told.
"The women played well tonight against a scrappy St. Mary's team," said Coach Fred Wagenaar. "They came in excited about their 2009 Homecoming matchup and it showed in the way that we executed. Chelsea Phillips was fantasic with her hat trick. We have a week off between games, which we will use to get healthy and sharpen up with practice," concluded Wagenaar.
The Jackets, will next play on Saturday, October 17th, in Lamoni when they'll face Avila University. That game will kick off at 5:00 pm. Stay tuned to the Jacket athletics website for continuing coverage of the women's soccer team and all of Jacket athletics.
