Lamoni, IA-The Graceland men again overcame their injury troubles with a fine win Thursday night over a quality Central Methodist side, 2-1. The Jackets improve their record overall to 6-4-0, and 3-1-0 in conference play.
The first half was eventful for both squads, with Central Methodist jumping out to an early 1-0 lead in the third minute to start the scoring. Graceland answered back with a goal by junior Kasy Kiarash (Toronto, Ontario) on a beautiful bicycle kick which flummoxed the Eagle keeper. Senior forward Diego Gonzalez (Brampton, ON) followed Kiarash's score with a fantastic strike of his own to put the Jackets ahead going into halftime.
The second period was a defensive battle, where both sides were able to keep the opposing offenses out of the net through solid backfield play and missed opportunities by the offenses. With the defense keeping the Eagles at bay for the second half, and the Jackets would ride their one point lead to victory.
"No one likes to play from behind, but the fact that we did and came back to win is a big morale boost for us, since we have struggled at times this year with coming back," said Coach Angel Monroy after the contest. "It was great to grind this win out, especially with as many guys as we have out with injuries right now. And hopefully a win like this can help catapult us through the rest of the season," Monroy continued, adding: "We move on to an exciting Homecoming matchup this sat evening. And we will continue our focus on getting healthy again, and work to get over our injury problems."
As Coach Monroy noted, GU's next matchup will be Saturday, October 10th on Homecoming, with the men taking on St. Ambrose at Rasmussen Field in Lamoni. That game will start after the women's match at 7:00 pm. Stay tuned to the Jacket athletics website for continuing coverage of the men's soccer team and all of Jacket athletics.
