Fayette, MO-The #14 Graceland women defeated Central Methodist by a score of 3-0 in Fayette, MO. The Jackets took advantage of what opportunities they were given on offense, and created a few of their own as their defense continues to play with a purpose.
Gisela Arrieta (Valledupar, Colombia) put the GU side ahead with a powerful goal early in the first half, and the Jackets never looked back. Junior forward Chelsea Phillips (Granada Hills, CA) followed Arrieta with a breakaway strike that beat the Eagle keeper to bump the Graceland lead to 2-0 leading into the break.
The Graceland backfield refused what attack Central Methodist could muster in the second half, and the sophomore Arrieta put the game out of range for the Eagles permanently with a breakaway strike to the of the net, beyond the reach of the keeper. That score put the game at 3-0, which would remain the mark for the rest of the match.
Arrieta was the clear standout for the evening, having now scored seven goals in her last three games with her two points this evening. "She has played fantastically," agreed Coach Fred Wagenaar after the game.
"The team played solidly against Central Methodist," said Coach Wagenaar, "and it feels very good to head into the second half of the season with this win. We look forward to finishing strong in the last few weeks of play," he concluded.
The Jackets (9-1-2) will partake in GU's Homecoming festivities this weekend, which will see the squad take on St. Mary's College at Rasmussen Field in Lamoni, with the game starting at 5:00 pm, Saturday, October 10th.
